Had my car at the dealer for a few days to fix steering wheel off-center, a rattle behind the air bag cover and to check the wind noise.
Well they completed 2 out of 3. They test drove another brand new X3 and said the wind noise was the same, therefore wind noise is normal. Due to the vehicle aerodynamics and mirror size, that's the way it is... I will be following the acoustic glass install a few of you are planning closely! |

No wind noise in my M40i.
I was really concerned after reading this thread and waiting for my delivery. X3 delivered 4/27. I've given some weeks. I have yet to hear any wind noise to speak of. Overall car is very quiet. While Acoustic Glass is not a listed option. I've seen the suggestion that dealer may be able to order. My car was in production, or I would have tried this. Quieter is always better and I would have like to have the acoustic glass, but not missing very much, as, like I mentioned above, it's a very quiet ride. Wife has remarked several times on quiet, comfortable ride. I don't know if they have resolved issue, or if I just got lucky. |

Two weeks into driving my M40i - it's definitely not as insulated as my prior X5, which is definitely the more luxurious of the two, there is more wind noise in the cabin in the X3. Quiet is a relative thing, it depends what you're used to and comparing it to. That said, it's not that bad, and wouldn't trade the M40i for an X5, the M40i is that much fun.

I drove a 2018 X5 back to back with our X3 m40i, and actually found the X3 to be just as quiet as the X5, with the exception of the wind noise. Might be the differences in tires between the two. The X5 road a bit softer, but that's a different subject.

I agree. I just had an X5 as a loaner and found the overall quietness to be comparable with our X3. The X5 was a softer, more "boat-like" ride, but I MUCH prefer the firmer ride on our X3.

Both pieces of glass received today from getbmwparts.com. Unfortunately, both were broken. No visible damage to the outside box, but apparent the box took a pretty good hit on a corner.

I'm not sure anyone has replaced their side windows yet. I'm trying to, but mine came in broken.
I am planning to have the dealership do the work, unless someone can point me to a good service manual description of the steps necessary. I trust myself more to do the work, but I don't really want to learn as I go and break something in the process. |

Has anyone considered checking with SafeLite to see if they'd replace the glass, with you providing the glass? Just a thought as I'd assume they do more window replacements than the dealerships...and probably do a better job.

Has anyone recorded this wind noise? I think this is what I am hearing at all speeds. Even sometimes at stop lights with traffic rushing by. It seems to be more / louder on certain roads.

Months ago, I raised the wind noise issue by speaking directly to owner of dealership. Wrt follow up ,not surprisingly, I only hear crickets.
Last week, with rain and no music, I hear the wipers swoosh, swoosh. G01 is a brand new, 3rd generation. Lovely BMW. |

I looked closer at both the driver and the passenger side front doors. At the top corner near the B-pillar, the black trim was flared out away from the body by maybe 1/4" or less. So, I bent both doors so that they were flush. I also applied some pressure to the middle of the window frame and close to the A-pillar.
I had applied some extra weather striping that I bought on Amazon - it wasn't helping - so I took it off. The results were immediate and substantial. |

My acoustic glass order arrived from getbmwparts.com. Second try was a charm with no broken glass. I have an appointment with the local BMW service department to install on Monday.
The glass is noticeably dampened compared to the standard glass. Ie when you tap on it the standard glass has a tinny sound. It also has a distinctive groove in the edge of the glass and you can see a thin line that is the acoustic material. Also different numbers printed on the glass versus what is installed. I will update after the install is complete. Wish us look for a clean install and no door rattles etc. A few pics: |

Highly considering this but dealing with another odd noise. Present in this video at 3-5 seconds. Road condition specific. Can anyone hear what I am talking about or am I crazy and the background pulsing harmonic noise is normal.
