So dad mine has opened on serveral occasions, luckily none causing damage or had anything stolen yet:
Stationary in 4 lanes of traffic on the M1, suddenly felt cold and looked round and it was wide open. People in other cars just staring at me. Randomly on my driveway on numerous occasions. Came out of my sons swimming lesson at a place in the countryside near me this week to find it wide open. Laptop bag and some shopping right in view. Could have been like it for an hour. Probably more, just can't remember them all. Only had car since October. |

In one year Of ownership the trunk has opened by accident about 15 times. It’s the worst part of the car by some margin. It opens at work, at home and in a supermarket. Very annoying

Only had it happen a few times. Pretty sure it was always due to keys I’m hoodie pockets. Couple times where I’ve been at a friends and we look out their front window and someone will be like why is your trunk open?
One time at a restaurant. Came out and it was open. No idea how long for and thankfully nothing stealable inside. One time in traffic. Coming up to a yield sign and all of a sudden my trunk starts opening. I’m sure others around me were thinking wtf. I’m always a bit paranoid now but I have yet to do anything about it. Key cover seems smart though I do keep my key on a key ring and would not want anything bulky at all. Key is big enough on its own! This problem would be solved if there were nfc key possibilities like credit card sized or bracelets. Maybe one day.... |

My two year old son grabbed a hold of the key and opened the boot while parked in the garage. It scrapped the bottom of the trunk against the garage door until it got stuck and could not open anymore.
We now hang the keys too high for him to reach and the car is parked forward enough to avoid that again. Quoted 2300 to repaint the trunk. I bought some factory touch up paint and tried my best to touch it up.

Just don't make the mistake I made...overtightened Allen key screw for sleeve, and then when sliding key out the boot opened as the button got depressed

I've noticed the keyfob buttons work from a very long distance away from the car...is this really necessary.! It would help all these accidental presses if you needed to be closer to the car..

This is not an issue i have ever had with my current F15 X5. I have a new G01 X3 coming in April and this is worrying me. I have seen this case online has anyone got one and does it solve the issue.

I opened my liftgate by accident by misjudging my X3 fob with my garage fob.
The gate opened and hit a solid wooden shelf behind it. Fortunately no dent, no scratch, no chip...just a slight discolouration in the alpine white paint. It makes me think that BMW designed lift servo to not exert additional force when encountering an obstruction... |
