X3 G01 reliability
Hi guys,
I am an owner of the X1 F48 but very keen to sell it after brief 2 years of ownership. Owned a few BMW's before the X1 and must admit that the F48 is by far the worst. Truly shamefull car BMW!!! So many VERY costly repairs which should be covered by BMW recalls. So, in the market for the G01 second hand. Would like to know what is there to be vary of, at what mileage etc.Is it reasonably reliable car? I really dont want to jump into another money draining car. Thank you all |

It’s a lottery and depends on the individual car, so difficult to generalise. Early M40’s had issues with drive shaft vibration, and there are lots of electronics that can turn the car into a brick. The engine is pretty solid though. Some owners will have very few issues despite years of use, while others will be plagued from day one. I’d ask the dealer for a written reply about known history of a specific car if you’re interested, particularly any warranty work etc. |

As avi66 has already stated, it’s a roll of the dice!
My last car was a heavily modified VW Golf R and had 4yrs of trouble free motoring. My Golf R previous to that was completely stock and had headlight and exhaust problems that led to me selling the car. My current M40d, has been ok so far apart from from Adblue/AGR issues so it’s a minefield if your car will be reliable or not! Think the important thing is that if or when your car develops issues, it’s the customer service that counts, how you’re treated and how easy the problem is to be rectified.

Thank you guys. Prior to the F48 I had an E92 LCI for over 5 years and sold it mainly because of ULEZ.
It was a very reliable car that did over 50k miles while I owned it. Thinking about it nowdays even more that I am immobile coz of constant issues with the F48. When you guys say that it is a roll of a dice, it makes me think they learned from the F series. The problem I have are very common and shared across all F series. Really a series of bad designs, wrong materials. I was digging a bit issues on the G01 and it seems people complain about the engine mounts. from very early age. |

If you decide to purchase a G01 that still has lots of warranty left then you have no issues.
If you purchase a G01 and start to modify it then you may have issues if that part fails irrespective of warranty for that part. Think you have to decide the age of said vehicle before you purchase it as that may have a distinct influence on what potential issues you may have!

Yeh, a little more info would be helpful, especially since the G01 is now into its 8th year. What is your budget and what years are you looking at? Does your budget allow a low mileage model with a CPO warranty? Or looking at 50k miles models? Looking at a 30 or 40i? For reference, my '19 30i has 34k miles and has only needed oil changes and recent brake fluid change {plus cabin and air filter changes). Very reliable.

Looking at cars with around 50k mileage. Can't really afford lower than that and don't really fancy an SE with low miles for the same price.
I also toy with with an idea to move away from BMW for the sake of having a "new" car with warranty. It is hard to imagine as never owned anything but BMW. |

If you see a history of lots of dealer warranty visits probably best avoid. Always try to get stuff I writing as if the shit hits the fan, dealers have short memories about what was said lol. 😂 |

Buying a G01 with 50,000 miles can be a good option for many people, but it's important to be aware of the potential for increased repair and maintenance costs, as well as the fact that the car will likely no longer be under factory warranty. If you're considering a BMW G01 with 50,000 miles, it's wise to carefully consider these factors before making a decision. You may also want to explore other brands and models that may offer lower long-term ownership costs.

This is my seventh BMW, and despite many times where I have vowed that I will never buy another one, I always come back. One of my favorites was an E92 that in eight years of ownership had zero mechanical defects, only some age related maintenance at the end. Others were not as reliable… all of them we were the 3rd owner. Maybe this means something, maybe not.
Having a good sense of its history and maintenance to me goes a long way to knowing its potential for troubles.

Zero issues on my FY21 M40i - running on 3.5 years now.
I would suggest at least MY20, most issues should be ironed out by then. I have been on this board for a while. Just based on the complaint threads (or lack thereof) over 4 years, I would say overall this seems like a pretty reliable vehicle. When people bicker about hard ventilated seats and auto start stop or spare tires, thats when you know no serious problems are prevalent. |

Thank you guys for all for your input. Sounds like the only real issue are the engine mounts which are a legacy of the F series and the sunshade. I am sad to hear about the sunshade as BMW must know that it was a real issue for many F series owners where it falls offf. The repair is around £2k. Hence the reason why mine os retracted all the time..

If you find a solid example, I wouldn’t hesitate, and personally, I’d look for iDrive 7 cars, so around model year 21, which I think is from about Oct 2020, as some earlier MY21 were still iDrive 6 IIRC. Bear in mind this is a global forum, so not all options and associated issues will apply to the UK. Also, a lot of UK G01’s are assembled in Sourh Africa, rather than the USA. Happy hunting. |

GPT hedges its bets too much and doesn’t offer an opinion.
Until AI can come up with an authoritative and opinionated response that matches my own values, it’s not ready.

It’s intentionally designed to be milk-toast because people are offended by literally everything and will cry about bias every chance they get. Reporting of established facts is no longer a valid strategy without also considering how those facts might make someone feel. You really can’t make this stuff up…

I had an E84 X1 for 10 years. In that time stuff did go wrong, but apart from the timing chain being fixed under warranty (twice) the rest was all wear a tear items. I found a good local specialist to me and didn't pay through the nose for repairs, and then used BMW when they offered their 'Value' type servicing on what I needed. In 10 years I never needed to replace the exhaust on that car.
I've had my G01 30d (2018) for almost 3 years. It was just 3 years old when I bought it and been well looked after and hardly used tbh, 14000 miles in 3 years. That would put some off with a 3.0L diesel, but it's still running sweet now at 39000. Maybe a slight sign of something engine mount wise going on, but I’ll face that when I need too. So far (and I bet I'll jinx it now) no mega issues that I've had to pay out for but be warned, electrical items can cost a small fortune on this type of car. I have a 'BMW Insured Warranty' and did claim last year as the GPS aerial went bad. That cost me £250 (my excess) but the service guy told me it was a £900 repair normally. I think I get to extend this warranty once more and will probably do it for peace of mind. Other than that, I've had the SOS system battery replaced under the 'BMW Used Warranty' and the recall for the EGR software update done. The iDrive screen is starting to play up a little and has a dark patch on it when it's very cold outside. You can see it quite well in the dark, but in the day light after the car has warmed up you can't see it. I'm tossing up whether it's worth using my warranty to replace it, as not too happy about taking the dash apart and then introducing other issues. Servicing wise I’ve used my local dealer so far as their prices have been within my budget, but I’m getting near to replacing discs/pads… so we’ll see where I’ll go for those. Now, tyres... YES ...on the 21" rims they don't last forever, but I knew what I was getting into with them, and my mileage is not super high now-a-days. If you do take the plunge, get a G01 that’s about 2 years old, get a decent warranty, or save some cash for that rainy day. I wish I’d gone for a 2019 model now… and …I really wish I’d been braver and found that extra cash and bought the M40d, but the 30d is no slouch and a good compromise, at least that’s what my wife says! She doesn’t know my next car will be M Performance yet. J.

I have the same spec and model year as fdpxfunix and can confirm very similar ownership experience.
I got my G01 with 40,000 miles on the clock and so far I've loved driving it up to 60k. Problems have been: A valve in the exhaust sqeaking when accelerating/lifting off - replaced under warranty Rear screen washer nozzle doesn't work. Currently booked in to get it looked at under warranty SOS battery module failure in cold weather (again, booked in on AUC warranty). There are instances on here of people doing a DIY job on this for about £120 when out of warranty There is a whistle when it is really windy on the motorway and a huge gust hits the car, I think I've narrowed this down (with help on the forum) to a tiny gap in the sunroof seal as it shrinks over time. With the B57 engine (3.0d) you will experience EGR cooler recalls but the dealers handle it quite well. Other than that, it has been great to own over the past year. |
