Square setup - 20" wheels

I just ordered a 2021 X4 M40i with the 20" 699M staggered wheel.

After having read for hours on this forum, I would like to move to a squared setup. I have never had a car with a staggered setup and was curious if this wheel/tire combination would work on all four corners.

Wheel Size: 20x9
Offset: +40
Centerbore: 66.56
Bolt Pattern: 5x112
Machined Black Outline
OE Center Caps Interchange
Tire size: 255/45R20

Thanks for any help.

Those are definitely going to be inset.. You're stepping down from the 275 rear width. I'd go 20x9.5 all around, maybe a 25 offset and put 275 on them, or go to 10 and go slightly larger or run stretch. At least on x3m40i this is what I'd do and plan on doing.

I'm interested in opinions on this as well. I have a perfectly satisfactory square setup on my 2021 X3 M40i now, but my wheel size is 19". In the future I will likely buy some aftermarket 20" and put some non-run flat Michelins on them, and reserve my 19" for snows or modest all-terrain tires.

Regarding the inset, if I were to move to 255/45 R20, what would be the recommended wheel size?

Thanks.

BMW sells a square 20" setup as winter tires.

You will get 8x20 wheels with offset 27 and 245/45 tires.

So in general it's no problem and in regards to the xdrive even better than a staggered setup as you can rotate front and rears to keep all wheels evenly worn.

Thank you for that.

What you've posted will work fine. A square set up is what I will be doing when winter gets closer. Your specs are fine.

The stock 19" setup from the factory is square. Specs are 245/50ZR19 tires on 19x7.5 ET32 wheels.

Having seen M40is with that setup there's a lot of room between the tires and the fender. You could go much wider for the wheels and tires but would have to be a more aggressive (lower) offset. Clearance to the upper control arms is pretty tight on the stock wheels. Also the front wheels' clearance to the fender liners at full lock might be a concern if they're too wide.

That is about ⅓" arch gap loss compare to the 21" set-up, not a lot.

Yeah, that's definitely true in the front because the tires are the same width, both 245.

In the rear the 20s and 21s is 275 though so that's a fairly big difference.

I though you were talking height wise. 15mm spacer for both the front and back would fill the 14.4mm difference.

I would do 20" and probably will trade my 21" for 20"

Ah, yeah I was talking about horizontal gap to the fender. I should've been more specific.
