Oil change
Hi,
I searched the forum and found conflicting answers, some people use 5w30 and some people use 0w20 and some use 5w40 I did a searched on Pennzoil website and it recommended these two Premium Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 Full Synthetic (a) 5.3 Standard Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-30 Full Synthetic Will these two work ok? What would be the equivalent for Castrol brand? I've used Castrol many times for my e90 and it's been great. Also I'm in Canada, anyone in Canada can recommend where you purchase your oil from? |

You need to make sure you're buying a BMW LL-14 FE+ certified oil. There's a reason they've gone to 0W-20, and if your hood has that grade label I would continue to use it. I used Fuchs Titan GT1 0W-20 when I did the break in oil change. Germanparts.ca has good prices on oil and they deliver in a day or two.

Since this thread is regarding an X3 oil change, does anybody know how many quarts/liters of oil the M40i (B58) takes for an oil change? How difficult is it to change the filter, since BMW decided it was far too easy to change on the previous generation of engines? I am coming from the N52 and N55 series of engines which have the filter right up front and on top - very obvious.

It takes anywhere from 6-6.5 liters, my recent change only took 6 and showed 100% on the oil level reader. You need a 32mm socket for the rear filter housing, it's relatively easy to remove with the engine cover off. I take the filter out and put it in a plastic bag so it doesn't drip. Whole process including putting the car on jackstands takes about 45 mins.
32mm socket 25nm for oil filter housing 17mm socket 25nm for drain plug Mann Oil Filter HU 6022 z 6-6.5 liters of 0w20 BMW LL-14FE+ Oil. |

I forgot to mention that my car is 30i not M40.
I've been searching around it looks like the correct filter Mann filter for this is HU 6014 z and it's 5.5L fill up. Under the hood it does say 0w20 I guess I will go with the Fuchs Titan GT1. Is there any alternative? Hoping to buy locally from stores like Canadian tires, Walmart, etc... lol |

Dealer or online, it’s painful trying to find the approved 0W-20. You might get lucky with Pennzoil in store since it’s rumoured to be the same as BMW’s Twin Power brand but I couldn’t find.

The Twin Power is made by Shell, they also own Pennzoil. BMW left their arrangement with Castrol about 3 or 4 years ago and moved to Shell.
Fuchs is one of the largest independent lubricant manufacturers. They are considered a boutique oil compared to the super majors. The differences are probably negligible when it comes to performance. I got Fuchs for less than the dealer will sell me the Shell stuff. |
