Thumbs down

2016 X3 28i White with 32000 km on it.

Got brand new delivery 2016 March. Quite a few issues already.

ConnectedDrive won't work, the ball was kicked between dealer, BMW Canada and BMW USA for over 10+ phone calls. It took 3 months to get the problem solved.

In extremely cold or hot day, the comfort access won't work, door won't open , engine won't start and prompt no key detected. Towed back to dealer stayed that two times over 12 days nothing found.

The driver seat leather worn out, two cracks on it, had it replaced by warranty.

Twice already, in driving, it prompts "please fasten seat belt" but actually seat belt is on ( driver side), how to unplug and plug in couple of time to get rid of the annoying alarm.

Can you define what you mean by "worn out"??

There were two cracks at driver seat, one was around 10 cm and the other around 5 cm, close to each other. The service manager told me that this issue has been reported quite a few and they had the cover in stock. Replaced the cover under warranty.

Also had my seat leather covers replaced, apparently the crack are formed on where the leather is fake.

Never had any issues with the leather. Our car is always garaged with sun protection option +35% ceramic tint. I also use a windshield visor from time to time.

If anything, the leather looks fantastic.

2011 X3 28i with N52 engine. 84k miles now, purchased as a demo with 6k miles on it. The only out-of-warranty problems have been LED tail lights going out and coolant expansion tank replacement. I had a pre-mature battery failure and some faded exterior trim/weather-stripping that was covered under warranty. Otherwise, just routine maintenance items- tires, brakes, fluids, etc.

2011 N52, 73,000kms or so: coil packs and spark plugs, broken rear spring, some rattles and "cheap" plastic interactions (the shifter and various instrumentation clacks when actuated)
2013 N20, 45,000kms or so: occasional squeaking steering wheel (electric motor likely, has not been repaired), on occasion the power trunk refuses to latch

leather on the 2013 has been good.

In some reading that I have done, it sounds like early (2011-2013) 35i's are better regarded with respect to reliability, is that true?

2011 Xdrive 35i, 85,000miles. Just had to replace the oil filter housing gasket. They also spotted a leak from the oil pan gasket and recommend I replace the accessory drive belt. I got the X3 in Sept 2017 with 75,000miles. So far it's cost me more than the little 1series that I've had for 3 years. I really like this X3 though so I'm going to hang on to it as it's definitely great in the Chicago winter.

Consumer Reports does not split out the data for the X3 among the different engines, so there is no specific data on the 35i. CR reports the 2011 and 2012 X3 are much worse than average and the 2013 is average in overall reliability. Reliability for the 2014 and 2016 is indicated to be better than average with the 2015 X3 worse than average (power equipment reliability is much worse than average for this year while average for 2014 and better than average for 2016). The 2017 fell to much worse than average in the CR ratings and in-car electronics reliability appears to be the main problem (possibly due to teething problems with the new i-Drive software).

For 2014 to 2017 models, the categories of "engine major", "engine minor" and "engine cooling" were uniformly much above average in reliability. In contrast, for 2011 to 2013 models, none of these categories were rated much above average and "engine cooling" was rated much worse than average in reliability for the 2011 and 2012 X3 and average for 2013.

they should break it out by engine type as that has a big impact on the results I am sure.

New to me in Feb 2018 my x35 had 62k on it then. 71k now.
The X3 came with a carfax that reported a water pump at 45k and that's about it.
3 batteries in 6 years seems a bit excessive. The oil filter housing is weeping a bit of oil but I cannot tell where it's coming from. After my next oil change I'll know better. Other than having to fix a few issues induced by the previous owner, we have had zero BMW related issues so far. I don't drive it hard and am very attentive to preventative maintenance. If you can but an extended warranty. I got one through Ally bank. Bumper to bumper up to 100k miles with a $200 deductable per visit. The visit can be multiple issues.

2013 X3 M Sport N20 55k miles.

No issues, looks and drives like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Recently replaced the OEM tires and still on the factory brake pads that i'll change out this spring.

What was the deal with motor and tranny mounts? That seems quite early/low miles to require replacement.
Thanks/Bill

2013 x3 xdrive 35i 0 to 95,000 miles zero issues all original besides oil changes every 6,000 miles using royal purple and replacing keyfob batteries.
At 100,000 miles valve cover gasket, ofhg, oil cooler gasket, coolant tank reservoir started leaking. Two fuel injectors were leaking. Battery was not meeting performance specs.
Since I want to go over 200,000 miles I replaced all 6 fuel injectors, spark plugs, coil packs, entire valve cover(because pcv valve built in) and gasket, walnut blasted intake ports, replaced intake manifold gasket, throttle body gasket, ofhg, and oil cooler gaskets. Replaced battery, coolant tank, and all belts and hoses. Since my water pump didn't fail and I bought one at 50,000 miles I replaced it and the thermostat anyways along with a coolant flush. Replaced front and rear brake pads, rotors, and sensors that were original with 100,000 miles. They still had life on it, but again I already had the parts sitting.
113,000 miles suv started having rough idle only after engine was warm, replaced the HPFP resolved the problem.
Driver led taillight went out, re-soldered the factory board fixed issue
power lift gate driver side strut went out replaced.
I plan on changing the transmission pan and fluid followed by transfer case fluid and rear diff fluid next chance I get.
I also plan on changing the vanos solenoids as preventive maintenance.
My x3 has become a 3rd vehicle, but I plan on running her into the ground.

The turbo won't last 200k, so keep that in mind on your list of things

Wow! Nice work man! I wish you did DIYs on all this stuff. Please make sure to take pictures of tranny and diff flushes. I used to own a E92 335 N54 and did a ton of stuff to, from plugs to injectors to water-pump and thermostat, but never heard of people replacing the oil cooler gasket. What is the oil cooler gasket?

Bought my X3 28d new in September 2016 and it's now gone 35K miles that includes an extended cross-country trip extending west to Calgary and south to northern AZ. Since then, it's been suburban driving and R/T trips on the East Coast of 200 to 1000 miles. Other than scheduled oil changes and DEF refills, the X3 has been flawless. In fact, the reliability thus far, has been comparable to Japanese cars purchased in the 70's, 80's and 2000's. While it may be bad luck to say this, the BMW is surprisingly well made and problem free to date.
