Front strut replacement

Just found out after 113000 miles that I need to replace my left front strut. Then I got a call from my local mechanic telling me the replacement parts for this will be over $2000! Wow. I figured it would be expensive but that seems like overkill. I have DHP on my 2012 35i. I'm not ready to trade in just yet so I guess I have to do it. My mechanic said the rears were ok but I wonder if I should replace them as well. They are less expensive than the fronts. I understand that he front struts also come with a bunch of other parts necessary. What are others paying for strut replacement? I called the dealer and they want over $2800 for just the parts and I'm figuring that they would charge 4 hours flat rate to do it.

113000 miles on original shocks?

2000 came up cheap then.

Only change the rears if you'd like to, not needed until they fail.

Yeah I'm the original owner and 113000 miles on original shocks/struts. I think the actual cost for all the parts is $2800 for both front struts and other supporting parts. I like the ride with the DHP but wonder how much it would be to replace the same front struts if I didn't have the DHP.

About 700 at the dealer.

You could buy Bilstein shocks for half that. and replace all 4...

Gotta pay to play.

Slightly unrelated, but yesterday when I was doing my wheels I noticed a massive dent in my strut! No idea how it got there or if it changes the way the car drives. Figured i'd just share on all things struts!

Strut story time: Got into a pretty hefty accident in my X3 back in May, also went offroading a few times, but left front strut was leaking and got replaced under warranty. I remember hearing the damper compressing when it was leaking, but the new one doesn't make any noise at all. Doesn't matter a whole lot since I'm putting coilovers in soon, but nice to have everything in order at 50K miles.

Get those warranties in people! I had 750 miles left when they did this job.

You could buy all 4 for 3 grand and have a better system:

I'd choose those instead.

No 35i listed. Plus those are just the parts. You gotta have them installed. I don't need the rears yet.

Maybe you haven't seen the link I posted.
Plus I thought you said 2000 in parts only, of course there's labour as any part (including yours)...

It's actually less labour to install these; a little.

But good luck with the install.

DHP costs you twice...as the option and when you have to replace them...but is it worth it?
