thanks for this forum post, just got back my 2019 X3 m40i from dealer to 2022 istep and suspension feels much better when going over bad roads and also the main thing was, I got carplay in full screen with bimmercode

Yeah, doesn’t affect the tune, but basic coding will be wiped.

Interesting, have you personally done it?

A lot of ppl said it locks the ecu and it can't be tuned again, just like if you buy a new model with that software.

Mine is 2020 and I got it before they locked the ecus in june 21. I also did nearly everything possible with e-sys.

Also very interested to hear the results of this and what you've done with e-sys. I have a 2020 X3MC w/ bootmod3 stg 1 E30. Also in Los Angeles...

Vin not working on BMW website, error occurred message appears.

2011 F10 idrive needs updating, phone bluetooth not working correct since new iphone 13 pro. Worked fine with 11 pro.

I haven't done an update because I've heard it'll clear the tune and as of now, new models are untunable. There are some that say they can bench flash a new model but its a load n go flash with minimal gains and those tuners also say if you go in after this bench and get an update, it'll wipe the tune and you'll have to send in the ecu again and get charged again.

As for e-sys, there are many options, I think I coded like 10 or 15 things that bimmercode cannot do. the only thing you cant code with e-sys is the ambient lighting which bimmercode can do.

But all that would be wiped, including the tune, after an update

For the Imprint version, in the car, Voice ask for Imprint or go in the owner manual and type Imprint.

It should display something like that (probably not that version; 03/22)

Ok, so I’m a little confused as to how to check if I have the update and if it’s worthwhile to try and flash bootmod3 on my X3M.

I have a 2020 with a build date in 2019, however it does appear to have full screen Apple CarPlay? (I just bought this used from a dealer).

Is there any way to check if my 2020 is still flashable to unlock the dme with Bootmod3?

I had the istep upgrade - a couple of comments.

1. Makes zero difference to the suspension
2. Does not lock ECU
3. BM3 still works on 2020 cars

So...a year later (and 20 pages of replies)...I finally got the update. I asked for it last year, stating the Apple Car Play issues, but they said there were no software updates and recommended I speak to a BMW Genius. I initially tell them I'm there for an oil and brake fluid change this year. As the service advisor was walking away, I pulled one of the, "oh by the way" I heard there were some software updates.

As he walks back with my key, he said yep, you're due for an oil change, brake fluid, and there's a recall for some software updates. I check the BMW recall site for my VIN and there wasn't anything listed there. Later on, I get a text saying my vehicle is done and I asked him what software updates were made. He said he didn't know, just something the "ISPA" platform saw and updates.

1. My IMPRINT is still old (I will come back and update with photos later).
2. My i-step was (per dealer printout...I forgot to check myself again before dropping it off) S15A-19-11-534 and is now version S15A-22-03-552. What does this mean? I haven't the slightest clue, yet. The only thing I hope for this update is better connectivity for my Apple CarPlay. It sometimes lags (a lot) when I first hop in the car.
3. Navigation version was Road Map NORTH AMERICA EVO 2019-1 (I'll update later to see what version it is now).

Yesterday I went from the 03/20 version to the 11/21. I don’t know why they didn’t give me the 03/22 update. Does anyone have any info regarding what the 03/22 update includes over the 11/21 update?

Overall it seems very worth it and was an easy process at my dealership. CarPlay issues was the reason cited and there were very few questions asked.

Anyone with a 2020 model no matter what version of iStep you get you will still be able to tune. Yes you may need a Bench Unlock (done same day) if they update the bootloader as well.

After 3.5 hours we have success.
The tech came out to get me and wanted me to check the in the car myself if I can see if it was updated or not.
First thing I noticed was the M Lap Timer app, and the BMW Connected app icon in the my apps was now My BMW. I checked my Imprint and yes. 3/21.

I also had the Alexa option show Not Supported in the MY BMW app. Now it said Connect.

I was at 7/20 and after 3 dealerships and calls to BMW Consumer Relations 1 simple care from a tech took care of it all.

I asked him why he was able to update it and not others. He said because other techs are lazy nothing more nothing less.

He mentioned that he had no idea what Imprint was, or how to force update the car. Since the VIN showed no updates available for any type of software.

He had to call the master tech support line and they guided him step by step, as well as he said he literally watched a tutorial video from BMW about it.

He joked that I know more than the entire BMW dealership. But I said this is what I focus on. This forum and BMW CCA have great information.

My cost was $0. He said all updates are covered under warranty, and nobody should charge for it.

PSA for everyone else that is having the issue. I was very clear that I wanted an Istep and Imprint version update. I did not have Alexa or the M Lap Timer option. It did take a 3rd dealership to actually listen .
I have the notes from the tech also. I wont post them here publicly, but if anyone wants them I can share them.

I am facing the same issue and my dealer has no idea what I am even talking about. Would love to get those notes. I am also in CT, can I ask what dealer you went to?

Is there any harm in my going this route?

I'm currently at version S15A-19-11-550 on a 2020 x3 with a build date of May 2020.

Because it has helped me figure out why android auto isn't already available on the car when apple carplay is, and idrive 7 and cockpit live is installed.

I tried to download updates from BMW's software update page, but got the message that there weren't any updates available.

I then phoned ConnectedDrive and I was told that the car was up to date and because it was a S15A build (S15A-19-07-563 to be exact) that remote software and android auto couldn't be installed.

I then found this post, which helped me find what the actual software version displayed in the car using the Imprint screen - 07/19. The same version that the car was built with (car built 11/19)...!

I then phoned ConnectedDrive again and explained what I had found and agreed, they didn't understand why I was told the car was up to date. They said the latest version for the car is 03/23 and I should arrange for a dealer to update.

When I phoned the dealer (UK), they initially tried to say it wasn't something they dealt with and I should contact ConnectedDrive.
I booked appointments with 2 of the dealers closest to me to get the earliest possible date and found that they charge different prices - £180 / £195

I'm now booked in for May 18th and will let you know if android auto or anything else gets installed / enabled.

It will most likely be cheaper if you go to your dealer

BimmerTech quoted me $898 to update my 2019 x3 - currently at version S15A-19-07-563, and I'm now going to get it updated at the dealer for less than $250

UPDATE:
Took car to dealers 2 days ago to update the software.
The software is now 03/23 and both Apple Carplay (didn't before) and Android Auto now appear on the apps menu - I just started the car and they were there.
