Need help quick UK

Hi All

Just has a call from my dealer asking if I have the retention certificate for my current car which has a private plate.

The plate was fitted to my current car from new and is going to be fitted to my X3M Comp which is new.

They have told me I have to pay £80 to transfer it to my new car as I don’t have the certificate.

I told my dealer that they never gave me the certificate back when I bought my last car which they put the plate on.

They have told me that that retention certificate has been spent so I need a new one.

Can anyone with a private plate in the UK confirm this.

Cheers Steven.

When you hand back your car the finance company should send you the retention certificate

Sometimes they need to be prompted

i put my plate on retention ( all online now)

then give you a code which the dealer can then use to put the new plate on your new car

you then get a new number plate to go and get made up and stick on the old car

documents arrive a few days later

once the plate has been put on retention then onto a new car, yes the cert is spent and used and you have to pay again

£80 is standard.

I couldn't be arsed with the hassle so mine is currently on retention. I'll enjoy the 69 plate thing for a short while and then put my private plate on in the new year. My dealer kindly made up a setup plates FOC for me in advance of me doing it.

Thanks for that Tricky.

Do I need any information ie chassis number for the new car it’s going into and what do I do with the code?

Sorry if these are daft questions but my dealer is not very forth coming with any information and I’ve never transferred a number plate.

Cheers Steven.

I don't think you are supposed to notice $100 charges when you buy a $85,000 car...lol...

just go the the gov website for retention. when your done it will give you a code. just give that to the dealer

you will then be given the plate number to put on the current car that your private plate is on now

no just give the retention number you get on the dvla website to the dealer
I just asked the dealer to sort it saved me the bother then new v5 came within 3 days for my old car back to its original reg number

you can leave your private plate on your old car after you have put it on retention for 5 days I think it is so you can drive to dealer with old car with your plate on and drive out with it on your new car that's if your part exchanging

Thanks for that Craig.

Dealer told me they would sort out the private plate 3 weeks ago when I ordered the car. Now all of a sudden 2 days before I collect the car it’s up to me to sort.

Very disappointed in the dealer this is not the first issue with this sale. I have bought my last 3 cars from them with no issue but this time it’s seems to be a catalogue of errors.

These cars are a steal in the UK at the moment, the dollar equivalent retail is $100,000 but they are leasing them at $700 in and $700 a month and we're tight in the UK, we scrap over every cent quite rightly.

It was not the £80 that bothered me it’s the fact the I asked the dealer about transferring the plate and said they’d sort it.

Now it’s all of a sudden it’s my problem.
