2020 X3M Comp Oil Analysis

Anyone here gotten an oil analysis done on their S58 yet? I got my first one back (attached) for the X3MC and things look OK. But given the viscosity results after doing my personal oil change between dealer changes, I have to wonder what it would look like after another 4.5-5k miles.

What kind of oil was sent in for analysis?

It was BMW 0W30 LL01FE from the dealer oil change done under the maintenance plan. They list a PN of 83-21-5-A42-D39 on the invoice which I think is just a 'bulk' PN (per 10ths of a liter) since the quantity on the line item is listed as 70.

Where are they getting those standard values for viscosity and flashpoint? Below those values seem to be an oil quality indicator rather than an engine wear indicator based on the other data.

@JB20DGM It's good that you're doing a personal oil change between those dealer changes. That's what I will be doing soon too!

I would figure the viscosity and flashpoint ranges that "should be" are the specifications for a 0W30 oil per SAE/API/ACEA. And yes, I would think after just over 4000 miles for the viscosity to drop out of spec that would indicate a problem with the quality...or even potentially that despite what's on the invoice the dealer put the wrong grade of oil in (i.e., 0W20).

I'll be doing another oil analysis from the change I did when the time comes, and it'll be interesting to see those numbers. I know exactly what oil I put in whereas I have to rely on the invoice from the dealer to "know" what they put in.

Good point

Do report back when you have more data.
For me in S Texas, the 0W seems a little on the “light” side with our warmer year round temps. I might go to a 5w30 or a 5w40 instead.
But a good oil should hold it viscosity over its life… so maybe it’s a false negative here since we are not sure if the oil used by the dealer was the correct grade.

This is the first report I’ve seen where Blackstone actually recommended a shorter oil change interval than manufacturer recommended intervals. Usually the in between change is over kill.

I think some of that shorter interval is due to the viscosity being out of spec for a 0W30. Even so, I have pretty much stuck to a ~6000 mile (or annual) interval on oil changes for my vehicles anyway as I'm not trying to 'run out' the additive packages and any high-quality synthetic should easily make it that far.

[QUOTE=Mike02z;28394579]This was for my 22 M40i. I have since traded it in.

I'm guessing since it was a B58 that it had 0W20 (LL17FE or whatever that spec is) in it? Thanks for the post, it's a good compare point to my initial analysis at the very least.

Correct. It was the factory fill. I typically change the oil between 1200-1500 when the engine is new. Only the first time.

There is a strange color in the oil of my 2020 X3M. I looked it up and it was explain that it was a tensioner problem it’s gray in color. Possibly a little black, could anyone help there is a magnetic drain plug in place with 18,000 miles. Oil‘s been changed five times since new.
