BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) system does not rely on fixed mileage or calendar date intervals to determine when service is required. It uses sensors to provide individualized guidance for service requirements based on how you use the vehicle.

Correct. And, as evo-mike said above, maintenance services during the warranty period are included in the purchase price of the vehicle, so there's no financial reason not to have them done: https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/bmw-v...onditions.html

Conversely, not doing maintenance more or less when the CBS system calls for it may adversely impact your warranty if you later experience a issue BMW might consider related to delayed or missing service intervals.

OK, so back to the real world. I have a late 2019 build X3MC, purchased the car in August 2020. I took my car in for the break-in service right at 900 miles in September. 2 weeks later I got an oil change notification based on time (presumably). Now, yes the oil change would be free but it's not super convenient to leave your car at the dealer for service. So I reset the oil counter and moved on. This seems to be a very common occurrence around the break-in period.

And the only maintenance item that has the potential to affect your warranty is the break-in, and even then it's disputed.

The oil change that is performed during the 1200 mile break in service is NOT part of the oil change counter. The oil change notification you received now is because your FIRST oil change is due by TIME.(the break in oil change does not count as part of the CBS indicator) I am guessing your vehicle was built late last year and put into service on 11/2019 or close to that time, but it sat on the lot until you bought it in June. It is due on 11/2020 because its been 1 year(not from when you bought it, but from when the vehicle was put in service). Regardless of mileage, it is due by time. The CBS oil change is not linked to when the 1200 mile was performed. If you reset it, you screwed yourself as your vehicle is DUE for a service and that also messes up other services linked with the oil change counter (air filters, microfilters, vehicle check, spark plugs etc) Contact your dealer. If you reset the service, they can correct it back.

I know it seems odd doing another oil change a few weeks later. But like I mentioned above, by you resetting it, you messed up the calculation for future services as other services are linked to how many times the oil change was reset.

The oil change counter DOES NOT get reset during the break in service. SO it is totally possible to get an oil change notification shortly after having the 1200 mile service. This is very common for vehicles that sat on the lot for a long time.

You should never reset the oil service without actually having done the oil service. This is why you should always bring your car to the dealer or actually contact them and ask them. The car is smarter than most customers.

Do you happen to know if it also figures in time intervals?

I am approaching a year with only ~2200 miles on the ODO and have not noticed an oil service coming up (I will recheck).

On my E46 M3, there was no time interval but the dealership said I get it for free at least once a year.

1 year or I believe it's 10,000 miles or 8,000 miles. Whichever comes first. Covered under maintenance plan.

Thanks. I'll have to check to see if the computer is stating the same.

Look at the service interval. It will say a date (11/20 for example) and a mileage "in 4000 miles". It's due whichever comes first.

Thanks fresxdough.

I see the date now in the oil change interval. I was expecting something on the dash like the break-in service which was on there for months.

So according to your CBS you can go in 12/20 and get an oil change.

Run in service will be on dash from mileage 0 until it is reset with service function at ~1200 miles. Does not affect oil service interval.

I never expected to change oil 1250/3000 miles, for me after 1250miles on break in period should be reset, I remember on my m40i was reset

M40i doesn't have a break in service. Run in service is not tied to oil service interval. NEVER reset service lights unless you actually performed the service

Also on the x3mc my oil change was for the break-in and at 6k miles. Once you have passed the break-in oil change, there is info in the connected app or in the car that shows you when you need the next oil change.

On December 1st the little yellow car icon on the dash popped up. I guess it needed to be in the same month.
