Had a S54 in the M3 and S85 in 6 Spd M5. Loved them both. The V10 was Intoxicating. Eventhough the S54 was "raspy" I loved that "Chain saw" ripping sound it had.

It sounds much better in the Z4M than in the M3 I think. I think it's the best sounding 6 cylinder engine BMW has made, at least in the Z4M.

I agree on the N55, but maybe not making the list since it's not an "S" motor??

I don't feel the cracks/pops are that bad...(obvious bias )

The n55 sounds like shit. Fake pops and burbles.. no intake sounds.. it absolutely does NOT deserve to be on this list
No fake news here, it's completely real.

And how on earth do you expect intake noise when the mic is at the rear of the car.

Yes I agree, it sounds much better in the Z4M but I still hated it.

As far as fake burbles.. it's because they dump extra fuel into the block when you let off the gas which lands on the down pipes and makes the pop noises. So yes they are fake...

I didn't mean this car in particular I meant all of those shitty engines in general..

My B58 (downpipe, Muffler delete) sounds pretty damn sexy to me. I love a V8 (especially the e9x) but the sound of my modded B58 is just way too unique. I get compliments all the time.

As for the best, S85 is definitely up there..but have you heard a supercharged one? There's no competition at that point, that exhaust is literally the antichrist.

For example:

I owned a Z4M with the S54 and it sounded fantastic - much better than the E46 M3 (I had the Stromung mufflers). I tried unresonated midpipes and it sounded horrible. lol Had to change back to stock midpipes immediately. Definitely easy to make the S54 sound horrible.

Full disclosure - I own a Z4M coupe (S54) and E39 M5 (S62).

From a BMW standpoint, the S54 and S85 sound the best at their lofty redlines. They both sound great to me; since I can hear the S54 at redline without risking a major ticket (unlike the S85, from experience) that is my favorite.

Totally agree. I had an E46 M3 and a Z4MC and, at least from the inside, the Z4MC sounded waaaay better. This might be wrong, but I felt like it sounded better mostly because of the acoustics/shape of the car and because you were essentially sitting on top of the exhaust lol.

The induction sound from the S85. That is probably one of the best noises to have come out of any car.

Things you can do with an S85 engine.

Yep, totally changed my opinion about the S54 because I don't even like most of the videos that have been shown in those videos.

But even when you're idling or revving and listening from the outside, the Z4M is much throatier and doesn't have that hollow/tin can sound the E46 has.
