+1, M cars are always meant to be understated sleeper vehicles, Its been this way for a while, an E39 540i and M5 look very similar, we don't want BMW going crazy w/ design like Lexus/Toyota. Usually only M3/4 tend to get changes like fender flairs and aggressive fascias, I think it looks great.
M5s are a bad example of this. They have always been subdued as they aren't meant to be aggressive.

Put up these pics:

E30 and M3
E36 and M3
E46...
E90...

I saw both models (X3M and X4M) in Shanghai at the Autoshow in the "flesh". I agree with your point. Booth look a bit like a M performance model. But I think it's always difficult to make a X car look "M-ish". I drove the old X5M a couple of times. It's pretty capable on both, track and road. But still, there should always be the question if there is any reason to build a real "M" car as an SUV. IMO, all X cars should only be available as M Performance cars.

IMHO when one buys an M car, they are paying a premium not to compromise. I.e there is an expectation that all aspects of the car (driving, handling, engine, styling, spec) are uncompromised. You are paying for what you'd hope the engineers and designers would have done if they didn't have any restrictions/compromises to make.

In this case, the engine , handling etc might be uncompromised, but the styling and tech included definitely is. Given they are shipping with ID6 is a prime example of this.

While I don't think the X3 ///M looks bad, none of the current SAV M's strike me as much as the E70 X5 ///M did. The current SAV's do look pretty good though, which is more than I can say for the new 3 Series.

The X3 will never be as full upscale as the X5/X7 in any trim level. It’s not where it falls in the premium line up regardless if it has a M badge.
It seems they keep the interior upper mid level luxury at its top trim.

Remember it’s a brave new world for BMW the last 5 years. “M” has always been a performance idea and not one set standard of performance. There are levels of “M” treatment along the lines. “Competition” was to be the real top performance standard beyond what most thought a full “M car” was suppose to be. The argument with the X3M is if it is hard core enough to have a “Competition” badge.

I think this is part of the M-Power tour. Both this and the X4M are the launch spec colours.

My local dealer (also in Canada, so no difference) said that the first allocation they received was for July production.

Notice in the videos (at least on the X4M) it already has a license plate.

Very true, I still cringe every time my girlfriend points at a base 3 series and says "Oh look your car".

That might all well be true and I would tend to agree, as I am not an SUV fan, BUT drive it, before passing judgment would be wise in my opinion.
