Bimmercode: Ambient Lighting Colors & Combos (LCI)

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert. Proceed at your own risk.

My primary goal was to achieve Blue/Red Ambient Lighting combination on my 2022 LCI and these instructions are specifically for that end result.

Thanks to these posts for pointing me in the right direction:
https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1922092
https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1738645

From what I can tell, the basic principals are the same between all the newer platforms. There are 2 areas in Expert Mode where changes are made:

BDC_BODY3 ECU
  1. Select 360A/LIC_LCI_COLOR_LIBRARY_DATA
  2. Select 360D/LIC_LCI_COLOR_PROFILES_DATA

1. Library is where you change the stock colors of ambient lighting. The byte locations of the colors vary between the platforms. Basic Mode already has the ability to recode Bronze to one of their pre-set colors and luckily Red is one of them. In Basic Mode, there are 2 settings for ambient lighting color but you can't code combinations. For good measure, I set both of these to Red (oddly, will accept the same values just not different values).

Update: X4 instructions thanks to gramboda

2. Profiles is where you change the ambient lighting combo idrive selections. Every 2 bytes corresponds to the idrive menu selection; the 1st byte is the bottom choice, 2nd byte is the top choice
  • Byte 0 - Bronze/Bronze (bottom)
  • Byte 1 - Bronze/Bronze (top)
  • Byte 2 - White/Bronze (bottom)
  • Byte 3 - White/Bronze (top)
The byte values correspond to a specific color choice.
  • 00 = White
  • 01 = Bronze
  • 02 = Orange
  • 03 = Blue
  • 04 = Green
  • 05 = Lilac
From there, I went down the list to figure out which bytes represents the Blue/Blue idrive menu selection. This is byte 10 and 11, and the byte value for both is 03 (blue)

Since my Bronze is already Red via Basic Mode, I modified Byte 3 from 00 (white) to 03 (blue).

That's basically my workaround to achieve Blue/Red combo.

Looking forward to when someone deciphers the Library portion and creates some crazy combos!

i.e. You can change the color of 3 areas:
  1. Doors and Dash
  2. Footwell
  3. Map Light

Step by Step:
  1. Enter Body Domain Controller
  2. Use Basic Mode to change Bronze to Red

  3. Enter Expert Mode and navigate to 360D LicLciColorProfiles

Size: 848.4 KBName: Inked4_LI.jpg

Size: 904.3 KB
  4. From here, you can change the combinations that correspond to iDrive
    Name: 5.jpg

I created this quick Excel file to help with changing the values. This is for LCI not sure if its the same values for Non-LCI.

From what I've read on here, pre-LCI has no problem setting color combinations in Basic Mode. Can someone confirm?

Can't say for sure but I think if you can access those two areas via Expert Mode the basics should be the same

Correct, pre LCI you can chose what colors to replace under bronze easily.

I was able to code the bronze-red with iOS 15 and got into expert mode but I’m still reading to ensure I do it correctly. Looks like it works fine with iOS.

I don't believe that's the case unfortunately.

Yes, but getting the two tone or top & bottom color differences in the door must be coded I think.

I can confirm this is available in basic mode for pre-LCI.

I took the screen shot in demo mode so not sure if this is exact when connected but it is close if not.

ps: I prefer the red on top and blue on the bottom as the blue is brighter than the red/our eyes pic it up more.

I never thought about the red on top idea being less bright. Please post a few night photos too soon. And classic iDrive 6 gauges for the win!

Sure - will take some pics this weekend.

To be clear though, the red on the bottom is less light.

Interestingly, the human eye is less sensitive to red light (does not cause night blindness). That is why it is used for brake lights on cars and why campers/pilots use red lights at night.

Also, that is why BMW dashboards are lit in orange. Red is the best color (to avoid night blindness) but they wanted to reserve that for warnings so orange was the next best option - so I've been told.

Thanks guys! I updated the OP to include step by step with screenshots. I've also jotted down all the Bytes (21 total) and what colors correspond to which value in a quick Excel file.
  • Changed Bronze/White to Red/Blue
  • Changed Orange/White to Orange/Red (going for my VT school colors)
  • Changed Green/White to Blue/Red
I'll take some pictures once it gets darker.

They've been pretty slow with the LCI, I've been farting around with the NFC and other deeper menu options, hoping for a break through this week...

I wish they would update BimmerLink. Having better control over the exhaust flaps would be great.

If I could code an app, I could do that today, I know the control value to change. Save us all $600 for the autoflapper.... rip off.
