So I searched through the threads on here so far and most of the folks seem to be using 0W30 or 5W30. I have seen folks on the b58 side using 5W40 when tuned.

Why isn't the general census here the same on tuned examples? Or Did my search not yield the correct results.

There are probably REALLY good suggestions in the owners manual. I'd like to think the engineers who built the engine might know better than a few tuned examples. Then again, maybe you're not in warranty or are ok being your own warranty on a $30k engine.

Use what BMW says to use. Even if you don’t care about the warranty. Engine tolerances today are much different than 15-20 years ago. My opinion is if you care about your engine, stick with BMW recommend oil. If you want to learn more check out www.bobistheoilguy.com. More information about oil than anyone wants to know 😁

BMW also recommends absurd oil change intervals. I wouldn't follow them to spec. This is why I'm asking.

Coming from an e70 x5m where they recommend using 5w30 on that super hot v8 is troubling. Engine temps on that motor reach 225 to 230. 5w30 becomes water thin at those temps. Leads to premature wear and ultimately carbon build up and damaged bearings over time.

Having said that, I think 5w30 seems to be an OK choice here for the s58

Once a year or 5,000 miles is when I do an oil change. I think 10k is too much but BMW wants to keep maintenance as cheap as possible since maintenance is include. I also do an oil test after each oil change. Just piece of mind to know how the internals are doing. Saved my butt in one case. 2015 Corvette with a SC putting down 697 at the wheels on 11lbs of boost, headers, tune, and Meth injection. After the next oil change I sent the sample to BlacKStone labs and they basically said the engine had way too much copper in it due to premature wear. Sold it to a dealer the next day.

I did an oil analysis after a ~5k mile change (I change my own oil between the ones covered by the maintenance plan on the factory interval) and the BMW 0w30 LL-01FE oil had already sheared down below the weight of a 0w30. A virgin oil analysis of the oil showed the viscosity is already towards the low end of a 0w30 at the start, I guess that's where the "Fuel Economy" (FE) portion of the oil comes in.

All that being said, there were not any abnormal wear metals present and nothing else overly concerning. I may change over to a different 0w30 S(x) spec oil later if I continue to not see what I want from the oil analyses.

It wasn't quite down that low, or at least relative to a virgin sample of the BMW 0w20 (LL17 or whatever)...but it was below the range for a 0w30 oil. Considering it was halfway through the BMW oil change interval and about where I normally change the oil in my other vehicles and don't have the oil drop out of spec I'm not super thrilled.

This was also from a dealer change and they use bulk oil. I haven't done a sample yet from my change where the 0w30 came out of litre bottles to see if there's any appreciable difference (ideally there shouldn't be).

But, wear metals were still low...and in my case low compared to 'universal averages'.

I run LM 0w-40 in all my straight 6 BMWs, including a B58. S58 will be no different and will check with a blackstone UOA every other OCI

The 5W30 takes way too long to get up to ideal operating temps in the cooler months. I'm sticking with the 0W-30 like it came with.

Rotella T6 5-40 on every turbo vehicle I've owned (four bimmers and three wrx/sti's) including this one and it's been good to them to date... most in bmw land don't like this oil... i do

I was running T6 in my Subaru before I put the IAG shortblock in(regular maintenance LOL). Switched to Motul 8100 at that time. Labs always came back good in terms of sheer when I was doing them, even with E85, but I'm running 3k oil changes. I actually have one queued up to send out, but need to get over to the post office.

My dealer has used 0-30 which is what the manual says to use. I personally its too thin, wondering if I should follow suit with others here and use 5-30

Wow, super old thread lol.

I've switched to 5w40 a while back after I was told by a few folks about some bearing issues that some s58s have.

Better to run this slightly thicker oil for better protection.

Just dont drop in 10-60, ask the S85 guys
