Spare Tire Options
Wondering if a spare tire from an earlier X3 (E83) will fit the gen II X3 and clear the brake caliper and everything else. Looks like it has the same bolt pattern and hub bore.

Yes, the majority of BMW wheels have similar bore and bolt pattern, but the offset can vary. However, wheels from older X3 and X5 will fit the the F25 X3. I am currently using a set of older X5 17" wheels for my winter tires. Despite my X3 having 18" OEM wheels, the 17" wheels clear (just barely) brake calipers and fit well in every respect. In fact, the winter tires ride smoother than the OE 18" run flats. Hate to see winter end and changing back to those rock-hard Goodyears.

My guess is that it would fit but you could likely ask the dealership and they may be able to tell you. One problem i see with it thought is that there is no place to mount it besides just strapping it down in the cargo area.

The spare tire kits for the F25 and E83 seem to be different here:
F25 http://www.bimmerzone.com/product/BIM-SST-F25-KIT.html Spare Tire 165/70-18 (Maxxis) 27.1 in rolling diameter 2.2% smaller than stock F25 (27.7 with 245/45 R19 tires) E83 http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...T-E83-KIT.html 135/90R17, 26.6 in rolling diameter, Stock tire is 27.0 in rolling diameter, 1.7% difference from stock E83 . 4% smaller than stock F25 |

TireRack says above 3% diameter difference you could start feeling it pull and which would probably start stressing the differentials. For the true emergency of a couple dozen miles at under 40-50mph to get to a tire shop I'd do it if I had no other options.
Note that nobody has addressed whether or not the older 17 inch X3 temporary spare will clear the calipers on an F25. |
