BMW official: RWD, six cylinder 2 Series Coupe will continue with next gen G42
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com "There will be a successor that will be on a rear-wheel-drive platform, so customers who want and need a new 2 Series coupe will find that in our line-up, as well as those who want a six-cylinder." The manual is still unconfirmed, but we will still likely have one in the M2 coupe, as officials previously said that lower tier M's (M2/3/4) will have a manual for the future. I would hope so. In the article about M-cars and manual transmissions, the spokesperson said that future M2,M3, and M4's would have manuals, so I'd think the M2 would live on. I can't imagine that its sales are so low in comparison to the M3/4 that they would stop, and the M2 seems to provide the best press for BMW at the moment.

They HAVE to keep reposting this, because every time BMW announces a vehicle that isn't a rear wheel drive stick, the collective on here lose their damn minds. These posts are a reminder that BMW still makes those vehicles, and the existence of something different they don't have to buy isn't the end of the world.

Great news. But I wonder why BMW went with a FWD based (and super generic looking) 2GC. Scott26 has said that both the 4GC and 6GC outsold their coupe variants. A RWD 2GC could have been an awesome modern e46-esque kind of car.

Because most BMWs sell to the masses who don't know the difference between RWD and FWD, not just us enthusiasts

I'd argue that it's actually a pretty smart idea, if a bit unorthodox.

As enthusiasts we need to stop asking for more power and better performance.
The increased performance is delegating driver's cars to become auto-only with more going to AWD due to the increased power, so we can get better HP numbers, 0-60, 1/4 mile, Ring times, all the while - Those improved metrics actually make the cars less engaging to drive. The testing numbers will be great while the engagement will be obsolete. Then buyers turn to older cars that were not as powerful, but were (RWD/6MT delights) that feel more than adequately powered and gave the driver enough involvement to be considered great all around driving experiences. |

If it were ever to happen, the person at BMW who chooses to move the M2 to an FWD platform would need balls bigger than the grille on the new 7 series. They would also have no business sense either.

Just RWD and manual doesn't help much...the cars need to give some feedback. Too much insulation and there is no road feel, that just kills half of the fun. At least, these lower series cars should be more connected.

Compared to modern BMWs and modern cars in general, the M2's steering is adequate for me.
