Door locking/unlocking issues with 2021 X3 xDrive 30i (comfort access)

Hi, I recently purchased my first new 2021 X3 xDrive 30i (with comfort access). I noticed that after using the lock/unlock switch on driver door to lock the vehicle, I'm able to unlock any door from inside the car, by just pulling on the door lever.

From what I've heard, the door lever needs to be pulled twice to open the door (first one unlocks it and second one opens it).

My car opens at first use, irrespective of the Park/Drive and it even opens when the vehicle is in motion. This doesn't sound right to me. Is this normal for all X3s? Is there a setting that can be used to control this?

Any advice/suggestion is greatly appreciated.

One pull is normal. Older BMWs had two pull (like e39).

Once the car is locked, you can't open the door with one pull. There is a dead lock. This prevents someone from reaching in an open window and opening the door.

Just to make sure I understand this right, opening a locked door with one pull of the handle is expected behavior in newer BMWs?

Yes. Opening the door handle from inside while parked or driving is 1 pull and is normal operation. All the doors operate in this manner.

Sounds a little risky to me. I remember my other car just pulling through effortlessly and not engaging unlock mechanism at all. But thanks for confirming this behavior freshxdough. Appreciate that.

We've had BMWs operating like this for almost 20 years now so I'm sure your occupants shouldn't be pulling the door handles if you're driving anyways.

Yeah. I’m sure the adults would be that way too. It was my toddler I was concerned about. I usually don’t use child locks as my car doesn’t unlock by accidentally pulling the door lever. But I guess I’ll have to start using it now.

Hmm. I could have sworn my son had to pull on his door handle twice last night to get out of the car. I had pulled into the driveway to let him out before I pulled into the garage. Car was on and the engine was in “ready” mode. So, the doors were locked. 2022 X3 M40i. I’m out of town for the week so I’ll have to try it again when I get back.

It would be great if you can let me know about that, after you are back.

2 pulls when locked is normal. I would want to disable this except when I set the child lock. If you’re in an accident you’d rely on the car “knowing” and unlocking….too much of a lottery. This is why the child lock function exists….you can’t trust children but should be able to trust adults.

It’s as I remembered. The rear doors require two pulls to open them when the car is locked. First pull unlocks the door, second opens it. The front doors open with one pull, though.

Ah, that's what it was. I knew for a fact the front doors opened with one pull. Perhaps it kind of assumes that younger occupants will be in the back and that 2 pull is required when locked.

That would make sense to me. I would not expect driver/front seat passenger to open door handle when the car is in motion. I only checked the door handles in the driver's seat of my car though. Let me check how the back seats work.

Thanks for the updates on this jsh139 and freshxdough.
