Currently driving a 2017 330i m-sport lease that ends November 2020. At the time of the lease, it was just my wife and I and our French bulldog. I now have twin babies (4.5 months) so I need a much larger car.
Both car seats fit fine in the 330i but there is no room for the dog. I can also fit the double (side by side) stroller in the trunk, but not much else. Will the x3mc be able to accommodate the two car seat, space for the dog, stroller, and then some storage for trips? If it's too small I'm considering an x5 40i or going in a different direction all together like the new Ford Explorer St for a true 6/7 seater, but I really want an M car. My other car is a 2009 135i 6mt.

You could be cutting it fine with all that but it will fit with careful packing. I have one child with a stroller and still have half trunk/boot space free. The car can accommodate 2 kids no problem and has isofix at back for these. If you can always use the roof rack for additional storage if needed. You would love the x3m perfect for family.

The X3 is certainly quite spacious but for your needs, it seems that possibly an X5, Explorer, Aviator or Q7 might be more for you. I have a one year old son and we can easily fit his car seat, stroller, and plenty of room for luggage and stuff.

congrats on the twins first off.
secondly....i went from an x5 to an x3m and i noticed the decrease in the storage. throw in the fact i have a spare, i lost the storage underneath as well. I have two kids (9 and 11 now) but remember traveling with them when they were alot younger. like others have said, you can fit, but need to pack carefully. If your spouse packs like my wife, then you need a minivan.. lol (which is why we also have a honda odyssey) also alot depends on teh double stroller that you have... some have a huge footprint that takes up a god awful amt of room. i say x3 should suffice. worse comes to worse.. take a trip to the bmw dealership and try out both cars with all of your gear. |

It will be tight at best. I have twins. A significant factor is how far back your seat is. As your twins grow, it will not take long before they are kicking your seat. And the stroller will be replaced with all kinds of other gear. As you assess, I suggest you ask not whether they, their seats, and their gear fit, but whether they way they fit will be enjoyable or frustrating on a daily basis.

We had loads of space in a Golf R32 with two kids, and would have done until they were in their teens with no issues. The X3 is massive in comparison to my previous 430i GC. We only upgraded to such a large car because my teenage son has hit 6 foot and just wasn't comfortable with the head and leg room in the 430. Two babies, the X3 is plenty big.
edit 2: missed the dog - I've no idea what travelling with a dog and babies is like. sorry! edit: reading back at all the comments above, I'm shocked. X3 not big enough, maybe an X5, really? Most young families are driving a small hatchback with no trouble at all. True, some strollers are unnecessarily big, but choose the stroller wisely and you are fine, kids don't need much legroom until they are about 10 years old. There's an easy fix to kids kicking chairs, ask them not to, never been an issue for me. Have never understood why folk jump into large people carriers and minivans the minute they have a baby. We had an Impreza WRX, Golf GTI, Golf R32 until my kids were over 6, then moved to a 3 series because my eldest was a tall 8 year old. He was perfectly happy in that and the 4 series until he was 13. Strollers were never a problem, granted we didn't need a double, and we did move away from the trendy buggies to a MacLaren stroller as soon as the kids were big enough. I have two young kids in car seats and travel daily with our dog in a crate located in the hatch. Outside of day trips, you'll likely need a roof box to accommodate everything comfortably.

How big is the dog?
I think the X3M will be a tight fit. Get an X5M!

X3 is no bigger space wise than 3Series Touring (it is in the cabin, but not in the trunk/boot). I think the main issue will be the stroller and then space for the dog. unless you change stroller and try something like this

The dog is only 22lbs. X5M is out of the budget.

Congrats on the twins!
In June of 2018 we were looking to trade our 2017 MDX Advance for a X5 35i or X3 M40i. At the time our girls were 8 and 6. We do quite a bit of travel and use that vehicle so for us we decided to go with the X5 for the extra leg room in the back seat and extra storage (not that it’s much). We’ve loved our X5 for the past 18 months but with the arrival of the X3M I’m starting to itch. We have two more BMWs as well. A 2019 540i M Sport which is my daily and a 2018 M3 which I ordered to my spec and we use it on the weekends. Knowing the difference between a true M car and a non-M car I’m itching to trade her X5 for an X3MC and deal with the smaller back seat and less cargo space. I believe it comes down to whether or not you want an M car or just another suv to get from point A to point B. |

Toughest part will be the large stroller, dog plus “storage” unless you stack whatever you’re packing on top or under the stroller. Rear seats would be fine with the car seats and the latch system anchor point covers and seatbelt buckle are all well placed IMHO compared to my F80 M3. Invest in some car seat mats to put between the seats and the car seats. It’ll save you a ton of wear and tear on the seats. Wished we had done that all along, but at least it was in other cars.
Overall it’ll be cozy for a few years until you can start ditching the bulky stroller, but do-able. |

I have a 7yo this no stroller but her gear and a logotto Romagnolo puppy 16lbs. I use a 30in icrate to contain him when he's with us. Not much room for anything else. I came from an x1 w/ run flats. The amount of trunk and under floor storage space was amazing. The X3MC elevated trunk floor really eats into the useful cubic footage. |

The first photo is all the crap I transferred from our old 330i including the stroller and there is a decent amount of space for our dog. Second photo with all the junk cleared out.

Congrats on your new car and the twins! We have a 4 month old as well so when my wife’s q3 lease was up I was looking for a bigger vehicle. Decided on the x3 (non-m) thinking it will be much bigger but I was surprised how cramped the interior space is especially the back seat. We also have a rav4 and it has more legroom in the back than the x3. I love how it drives but it’s definitely not as big as I thought.
It’s too late now since you already bought the car, and I hope there’s enough room for everything. If not, at least you have a very fast car! |
