Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed the review. Liked that they took their time with the driving portion, and provided lots of insight and perspective. Too often these reviews spend most of the time on the features with the car parked. I can figure that out for myself by sitting in the car. The value, for me, comes from driving the car.

The way I see the video review is that is was a bit like the original Top Gear when they were interested in cars rather than messing about!

Very nice vid verysideways. I must admit I was expecting to hear more on the exhaust sound comparison and why yours sounds much better ;-)

Totally agree!

Good video!

Now that we have confirmed the identity of "verysideways".....I have a quick question.

I'm looking to change my tyres to the same as you. Are they a lot better? I'm on adaptive dampers.

Also, assuming now warranty issue etc. I'm always worried that BMW will use any loophole to avoid warranty work!

Many thanks.

I don't think there will be a warranty issue...I've factory ordered the same wheels with "performance tyres", this means they aren't runflats.

With the '20 M40i putting out 382hp and only .3 seconds slower to 60 there's even less reason to choose the M over the M40i. For me (wife and two kids) the M40i hits the sweet spot but I can see how the M would be the choice for hard knuckle enthusiasts who might actually track the car.

I can't for the life of me figure out why you would want to track an SUV. My Z4 28i is so much more fun to drive than my X3 M40i.

Not everyone has the ability to have a race car and an SUV. Plus, SUV is more practical so why not track it if you have the ability?

And I think that's the point for me too - I could buy a year old X3 M40i and a year old M2 Competition for the same price as a new X3M Competition.
One would be better for SUV stuff, one would be better for track. X3M felt like a compromise too far for UK roads...

Given that the X3M comes on PS4S from the factory, and you can spec the M40i with non-runflats from the factory, and I've stuck to factory sizes, I can't see how BMW could argue a case for any warranty issues.

And yes, the PS4S are so much better than the Pirelli runflats. Wet grip, dry grip, noise, and harshness over poor surfaces - all massively improved.

Based on rrp? Based on paying cash, pcp/hp on 1 year old cars are crazy apr rates

What about running costs?

Discounts on the X3MC are to be found, far better than the quote shown in the video.

I'm going to ask a dumb question because I'm confused about the tire choices on this car. It looks to me the configurator offers only run flats ranging from 19s on up. And only one all season set - the standard 19s. Other options are performance tires.

So...when you say you can spec the car with non-runflats from the factory, how? And for good measure, can someone explain why I can't order the car with 20 inch all season tires?

Help, thanks.

US/Canada?

In the UK the M40i is only available with 20's or 21's, and if you spec the 20's you can choose "performance" tyres instead of the runflats.

I'm in the U.S. I believe that the "performance" tires here in the U.S. means run flats and summer tires (not all season). Could be wrong, though, trying to decipher all this...

With my UK performance tyres I get a mobility kit according to my VIN so hopefully these are non-RFTs. Whether the US is the same...

My wife's got an M40i and it's a nice SUV and does everything right. I had an X3M demo for 2 hours and what I liked about it was the engine and the carbon fibre trim inside. The rest of it from the ultra stiff suspension to the uncomfortable seats that my M4 would smoke on a race track, I don't see what market BMW are targeting with this car. The M40i is a much nicer daily drive SUV than the X3M that jolts your body running over shadows it's that uncomfortably stiff.

DEFINITELY not Run Flats (performance tyres that is)
And as you say the clue is in the mobility kit 😂
