Anyone Had Valve Cover Gasket Replaced?

I have a 2012 X3 3.5i m sport with 85k miles, and for a while now there is an oil smell coming from the engine when I shut down the car.. It only happens sometimes, and has never amounted to enough oil loss to require adding oil...I've taken it to the dealer and they are saying I need to replace the valve cover gasket. If that is going, some oil will drip onto the hot exhaust system, causing the minor oil smell.

They are quoting me what I think is a ridiculous amount to replace it, $1800. While I understand there is a decent amount of work required to get at the gasket, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this replaced and what it cost.

Thanks.

OEM BMW valve cover gasket (11127587804) was about 40 usd. Your own labor = free same\similar process as any other N54/N55...

Have had it done twice.

1 year ago the cover was cracked, and it was leaking oil bad. Replaced the cover at BMW (of course along with gasket), which gave it a 2 year no mileage warranty.

6 months ago the gasket started leaking again. Replaced the gasket at BMW, but the cover itself was good as expected.

It's very common to replace valve cover gaskets on BMWs........... all of mine have had them replaced at one point.

Like said above, the gasket itself is cheap and you can do it at home if you're mechanically inclined. I did it on a 6 cylinder, must be easier on the 4.

that's an uncommon problem for that low of mileage, not saying it can't be the gasket but on a turbo charged engine would be more concern about excessive crankcase pressure.

the issue with the cost is they have to pull all of the fuel lines and assorted hardware off the top, the lines are one and done as to how they compress and seal.
still a lot of money for the repair, i would shop that price for a better deal.

A more common leak on these engines is the oil filter/cooler housing seals.

Good point Big Kid, as many of the after market oil filter kits have o-rings that are not quite the same diameter and they will seep around the cap

Did you ever get this sorted out? What was the cause of the smell?
