Using Automatic Parking Assistant: is curbing the rims a risk?
Before I write anything else: this has not happened to me.
I searched the archives for discussions about Active Parking Assistant and whether or not it’s likely to curb the rims at some point. All the threads I found were years old. So, I thought I’d ask today: does Active Parking Assistant do a good job of staying away from curbs? So far so good with my new M40i, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

I used it many times and never had an issue with curb rims.

Shortly after I got my car, I tested the auto parking in different places. The most complicated one was parallel parking next to the kerb between two cars, on the outside of a tight bend, on a hill. The car did a better job than I could have done, and stopped before it made contact with the kerbs and the other vehicles. I was impressed.

so far yes.
there are times where i would look in the side mirror and my butthole would pucker up as the wheels got extremely close to the curb, but the system has yet to make a mistake. even so, i always have my foot hovering over the brake pedal JUST in case. too paranoid i guess.

Thanks, everyone. So far so good with me, including several perpendicular parkings yesterday (to practice doing so), and two parallel parkings (one of which to demonstrate it to a friend) today.

Used it to get into some really tight spots parallel parking and been very nervy on more than one occasion on how close it is swinging in and keeping a careful eye on the kerb, but to be fair it’s worked every time, one time I had to adjust as it was too far from kerb for me

Yesterday, I saw an almost ideal test situation: a parallel parking space, both the car in front of and the one behind the space were parked over the curb, and the curb itself was low enough that there was no risk of curbing my rims.
So, I let Parking Assist do its job. My car did end up parking over the curb. So, then the question becomes: did the car not pick up on the low curb? It is supposed to pick up on the presence of a curb, right? Or does it just orient itself with relation to the two cars?

Another update: I used Parking Assist to get me into a fairly tight space on a city street this morning.
It thumped the curb. The car went bump, and I suspect that the brakes slammed on. Red lights flashed on the screen. Good news: it did not curb the rim. Rubber hit the curb. But I was a bit surprised. It’s done a mostly very good job up until now. Now I’m a bit more wary of it. I wonder when the next software update, if any, will happen. Is it possible to code the car to park a bit more slowly?
