2020 X3 M40i exhaust note

Since USA 2020 M40's are being delivered now, I'd just like to ask you guys how the exhaust on the B58T sounds in regards to 2018 or 2019 model year vehicles with the B58.

I recently picked up my 2020 M40i and have noticed that the exhaust note is not the same.
It does not Pop and crackle like the previous years. It's more of what I would consider a gurgling, a very muffled burbling. It sounds like the new X3 M to me.

I was really hoping for the loud cracks and pops from the exhaust but it just isn't the same as the previous years and it's slightly disappointing.

Also a side question: people talk about MY2020 X3 m40i seems to support exhaust valve control in another thread. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about that?

The exhaust control is for Active sound. For the interior exhaust through the speakers. I haven't seen any valve control for the actual exhaust valve

Thanks for the clarification.

https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...highlight=2020

In this thread Juris mentioned MY2020 adds the exhaust valve control feature, confirmed by the salesperson in the Utube. I thought that is for the actual exhaust value...

Good idea. When I got the car I immediately turned engine sound to „reduced " and was actually missing all the pops and gurgles. I played with it this morning and I think that the indices setting not only reduced ASD but also exhaust note. With it turned to sporty it would gurgle and pop easily. With it set to reduced no pops

Can you post a photo of the ASD menu?

I'm very curious about this since it would be nice to turn it up when you feel like hearing those pops and crackles!

Be careful what you wish for. Personally, I got tired of all the pops and crackles real fast. It's fun when you want it, but really annoying when you don't. The only way to turn it off on 2018 and 2019 models is for the engine to NOT be in Sport mode (which is boring and results in poor throttle response).

I didn't change my setting but I looked in the menu. I will check what I have set by default and report back later. That would be awesome if the pops and crackles are all just integrated into the tune and can be had with the B58T engine

Are the pops and crackles just from the speakers or the exhaust as well?

they sound like they are from the exhaus. When driving next to a wall they are def better to hear. Speakers would never change. But I would prefer ASD to be off.

Have you heard the 2018-2019 M40's exhaust and pops and cracks?

The ASD menu only changes the interior engine sound. Nothing for the actual physical exhaust.

My vehicle only lightly burbles. It's completely different than the 18-19 M40's. Even the cold start is different.

Crap, hope that’s not the case. Test drove a ‘19 and LOVED the exhaust burbles in Sport +

Yes I have heard it. And I was missing the pops and cracks when I got the 2020. I will try it again tomorrow but the exhaust was definitely different with the engine sound setting not on reduced.

Give it about 1000 miles or so. Exhausts take a while to run in. Don't ask me why but the M Performance Exhaust on my M140i sounded much better after about 1000 miles.

I would trade for a more reserved exhaust. As TX3M mentioned on our vehicles it becomes a battle of keeping in comfort with horrible throttle response and quiet, or sport with good throttle response but aggressive exhaust. I feel a bit like a tool driving through my neighborhood with it cracking and popping when I just cant stand how sluggish it is in comfort. I know it is totally personal preference... but I would swap out for a more reserved exhaust any day.

My M4 lease is up in about eight months so when I return the car I'm thinking about taking my M4 performance exhaust to a local shop to have it reworked into my M40i. I'll let you know what the exhaust note sounds like then, lol.

Anyone know someone who can tune the exhaust burble on the M40i without changing any other settings? I want to keep it as close to stock'ish as possible, but I'd love to have a 2-3 second burble.

Not the cheapest, but you can control the exhaust valves, so have sport response, but quieter exhaust note:

Can someone with a 2020 X3 M40i take a sound clip from the rear of the exhaust once it's warm and in sport/sport plus. Whatever combination would get you to achieve pops and cracks and such like the 2018-2019 M40i. I would like to compare.

It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
