Dead key

Attempted to replace the battery in the key fob with a Panasonic VL2020 (180 degree leads)... didn't work. Thinking I need to get the 90 degree leads. Advice?

In the meanwhile, I kept the motherboard out until I get the new battery. Am I not able to start the engine without the motherboard in the fob? Yes, I am a bimmer newbie...🙄
