2022 M40i 48V hybrid really a benefit?
Have any of the new owners of the 2022 M40i been able to tell a difference in any real gain with the new 48V mild hybrid system? Logic would make one think that the system would improve the start - stop functionality as well as add torque while there is sufficient charge. Just curious as the new system likely adds mass and I am curious if the benefits offset the inherent additions/complexity. I have seen the fuel economy listings and no HP rating improvement, but we all know BMW tends to be conservative with their published specifications.

Timely! I was about to start a similar thread! Avoiding electrification is one reason I went 2021. Looking to hear real world thoughts.

I've been thinking about this. On paper I see that the car is now heavier and just a bit slower from 0 to 60. Also, I've seen increase of the co2 emissions plus worse fuel consumption compared to the pre-LCI. So what exactly is the purpose of this technology?

This is exactly why this system is installed, same in Lambos, Ferrari... without it the car is taxed 20kE in France, 30kE for the M. There is no gain, only in weight. |

I have a MY'21 with the MHS, & from what I can tell &/or was told it helps with the ASS functionality, recharges the battery, & helps with low end grunt

I'm pretty sure the pre-LCI cars don't have the mild hybrid system unless you happen to drive a diesel, which I don't think you get over in America

I asked this question on the G20 forum. The 2021 M340 and M440 have the mild hybrid B58. One response is that it smooths out the start/stop function so it's pretty seemless and you get an initial extra bump in acceleration eliminating even the slight turbo lag in the B58. No noticeable benefit to fuel economy. X5 also has had the mild hybrid a year or so.

One reason might be that once you have 48V architecture, you can run some things electrically that used to need a belt, or run more things than you could before with 12V. Smaller wires too. That said, how much of the car is 48V?

48v system in our X5 is pretty great.
Saw a comment above suggesting this will "shorten the life of your motor starter and other potential wear and tear" except that's not at all how this system works. Since we're not doing research, to sum up: the "starter motor" is now a motor/generator replacing what used to be the alternator and eliminating the old traditional starter. It's a belt-drive system designed for this job. In day to day use it's nearly seamless (gets a little weird occasionally when sneaking into a narrow parking spot) and definitely helps with around-town/stop-go gas mileage. X5's average is something like 25mpg which is even better than my old (much simpler, much lighter, manual-trans) 330i. It's all quite clever and can't possibly add much weight: one component's been swapped, one quite heavy one has been removed, and the 48v battery isn't very big (Bosch's weighs 6kg). I like knowing my braking is generating juice that is then used for off-the-line power boost amongst other things. So many of our many many many stoplights are quite long, so /not/ idling away at them is a good idea. Now the ASS in my non-mild-hybrid X3 is just a sad old crank-starter 12v anachronism that is turned off.

Thanks, prototyp. It's good to see at least one satisfied customer. Where is the electric motor? What is adding the 10HP? It must be in the driveline somewhere.

The 48-volt mild hybrid system provides up to 11 hp of extra push and enables the gas engine to turn off completely when the car slows down to under 9 mph. The system is also able to shut the engine off and "glide" at speeds between 15 and 99 mph.
In theory, this should help with gas mileage; after my '22 X4 M40i, breaks in, I will report back. Last edited by newtoncd8; 08-11-2021 at 08:24 PM.. |

In the US the definitive standard is the EPA figure on the window sticker. All manufactures want those numbers to be as high as possible. If there was improvement in the mileage numbers you can bet BMW would make sure the correct numbers were reflected on the sticker. In the case of the 2022 48v X3 M40i they did not improve compared to the 2021 model.
