My 2018/19 M40i just opened its tailgate randomly overnight.

The keys are both more than 15 or 20m from the car and were not touched during the night anyway.

I normally leave the car unlocked in the garage.

Has there been any update on a solution? Is it key-related?

Not sure if it's a coincidence, but my key battery died suddenly without warning a week ago. Replaced the battery with a brand new one and it was fine.
Another thing is that I can't lock the car via comfort access with my left hand anymore. Right hand works perfectly (same side as my key in pocket)

Get the programming conversion to only allow hatch opening after unlocking vehicle

6 times in 6 months the trunk opened on its own

I read through the thread and it looks like some of you experienced the trunk ghosting. For us, it started in Nov 2020 and I lost it after 6th time this happened and the tailgate is all messed up. Anyone got it fixed? What was the cause? Any advice is much appreciated.

i had this on my first m40i. bmw just coded the boot not to open unless the car was unlocked and that stopped it from doing it randomly. its a pain because you cant just open the boot by itself. i had a leak in the TCU which is inside the shark fin aeriel. It was replaced as the water got in and corroded it causing random lots of issues, particularly with GPS & Key.

This issue happened to me over the weekend. I was at a touchless car wash and the trunk randomly opened during the wash. Ended up with a few gallons of water in the back, but could have been way worse had I not jumped from the driver seat to passenger seat to trunk to push the close button on the trunk itself. Not something I expected to have happen in a $60k+ "luxury" vehicle

Edit to add that I read this thread about the issue before this happened, so proactively got a key cover and it didn't help

You have a trunk button on your driver door panel too you know.

Also it doesn't matter how much your vehicle costs, things will happen to any and all vehicles regardless of how much you paid for it.

1. Get Bimmercode
2. Code the hatch to open only after a long press on the key fob. You can choose the number of seconds you have to hold the button before the hatch opens. I believe the name of the specific module in Bimmercode for this is "Tailgate function".

Where was the key when this happend?

The water jet of the car wash can cause to trunklid to open. But usually only if the key is outside the car close to the trunk.

Due to this the key should be placed in the key molding in the center console during a carwash.

I hve my X3 now for 17 month, use the BMW key cover and my trunk never opened without reason.

As has been mentioned, there is a switch on the driver's door. Did you try that and it didn't work?

I didn't, car is pretty new to me so still learning things. Tried to hit it quick but nothing happened. I guess you think this is normal behavior then regardless of how much it costs?

I did, but it all happened so fast and car is still fairly new to me so wasn't sure if it wasn't working or I just missed the switch. Honestly I felt like I had less than a second to decide and I figured better to go with the known fix (trunk button) rather than risk gallons of water flooding my trunk if the driver's door switch didn't work while engine was running. Even though I caught it pretty quickly, there was still about 2-3 inches of water in the small compartment below the trunk fuses...which happened to be where my Cellink NEO battery also sits. Fortunately, nothing seems to have broken but it did seem to short out my dash cam temporarily.

It was in my pocket (if it helps, I was in the driver's seat, engine running, car in park). I have a non-OEM fob cover which is pretty pliable, so perhaps need something more rigid, in addition to Bimmercode. Wish this wasn't an issue to begin with, but appreciate all the advice to mitigate it going forward!

Glad to help! Just in case you don't already know this, to use Bimmercode you also need an OBI adapter or cable(s) to connect your phone to the car:

Adapter:

https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-mxp/

Cables (in this example, you would need both of these cables):

Ok I am not crazy. Phew!

I went to wash the X3 on the weekend and as I was spraying the backend the trunk opened. I was like that is odd maybe the trunk button got pressed with keys in my pocket. Has never happened any other time to me and only happened when I sprayed the back end and no other time. It happened several times while washing the car.

I don't know if it is the kick sensor because it happened to me while spraying the top part of the backend not near the bumper.

So if I understand you correctly, the small pocket next to the wireless phone charcher (right side) is for placing your key? What will this special pocket do?

So when I drive into a car wash street (were you just sit in your car and the car is pulled through the street and you have the car running) you have to place the key there?!?!

I just have my car for two weeks and never washed the car so I'm scared that this will happen to me and I have no option to step out of the car because of the automatic car wash street...

No, only if you wash it yourself and if the key is outside close to the rear.

Quick update...I tested the button on the driver's side door in a normal setting and it worked as expected, so user-error on my part (I must've missed it or not fully pressed it in my moment of panic). Hopefully will get to coding this weekend so it won't be an issue going forward, but good to know it works in case I need it.

I never realized what that little slot was for, but looks like it was specifically made to hold the key. I doubt there's any special coating/protection to block the signal or anything, but I didn't even know what it was until now so someone correct me if they know

I now washed my car 2 times in a washbox by my self. My whole car was freaking out both times. Mirrors went in and out, trunk opend multiple times, sunroof closed etc.

My key was in my pocket but I was just standing so doubting if this is a problem with the car or strange enough the key in my pocket... One time the trunk opened when I was standing at the front...

So what is your advice? Leave the key in the car while washing it?
