Nowhere in idrive do i see android auto, under apps there is nothing and under media all i see is carplay as an option when my wife is in the car with her iphone. When i unpair and re pair my phone it also doesn't state connect phone to use aa but i do see it say connect to use this that and carplay. It's really odd because the notification just sits on my phone for aa telling to connect and i have tried literally everything possible but it just sits there. Perhaps i have a partial update? It's frustrating because I feel I know more than bmw about the update just reading this forum, impossible to get a straight answer on this. I'm in Canada if that makes a difference and do not seem to have any access to the bmw app store which seems to be blocked here.

As of now, here's the information I have:
1. 2020 BMW X3 M40i has service pack 15, but only vehicles with service pack 18 are getting the new Drive update
2. I need to pay to update to the new service pack 18 to get android auto
3. They think all their customers are dumb (I'm from Florida, unfortunately)

I'm not so sure it's as simple as paying to upgrade to SP18. From what I understand that's what limits our idrive 7 (2020 X3) from other vehicles with full functional idrive 7. If you could elaborate with more information that would be greatly appreciated. Even on the dealer level we don't get tons of info on these kinds of things. And I'm that person at the dealer that's trying to look for this type of info. I can guarantee almost anyone at the dealer has no idea what SP18 even is, and I'm literally not joking.

Google maps with android auto was a no brainer in my 2018 Golf R. The stock navigation system royally sucked. But, BMW navigation seems very good so far and I'm not sure there's a need to use google over it at the moment?

I'm actually struggling to see the need for AA. Before I got my X4 I couldn't wait for it to be released. Apart from using a different map provider (that might produce poorer HUD graphics) I'm failing to see the benefit.

I’m very happy with BMW maps and their car integration...getting tied up with CarPlay or AA has little attraction for me too. BMW routing and re-routing with U.K. maps works very well. I realise some in the US say Waze works better for them.

There is no way I would even pay $5 for an update, and Im sure its clearly a lot more. I plan on getting this done or at least requesting it in the next few months for my first oil change. I will definitely keep everyone posted. Lets keep this thread going with everyone's experience.

I tried what you suggested but I am unable to get Android Auto to show up on the screen. I'm wondering if there is a way to check what update version you have in iDrive and if I have the update but just cant get the phone to connect? I have an S20+ which is compatible with wireless AA.

Thanks.
[Does Android Auto show up anywhere on your BMW ConnectedDrive account...website show it as a subscribed services?]

Nevermind. I just got my X3 back with the July update as well.

Talked to my dealer and the foreman said they'll try to update to the latest software. They're a little in the dark to specifics on the update from BMW but they're willing to give it a shot.

I'll post back tomorrow.

suby01 - not sure where in CT you're based but we may have the same dealer

I saw this posted on the X5/X6 forum if your dealership is giving you trouble when asking for the new iDrive 7 iStep/update. There is an SIB for several vehicles (including G01 and G02) that requires updating to iStep Version 07/2020.51 or higher (the July 2020 release). It is SIB 61 14 20 which can be found here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...75285-9999.pdf

If your dealer needs a reason for the update, you can tell them you're having an issue with the "Deactivation of the Interior Movement Detector," and that should get you upgraded to the latest iStep version or at least push them to update their ISTA so you can get the update to fix the issue under warranty. You can take a look at the SIB for more info. Good luck!

Interesting, but I think I cannot use it in my case. "Deactivation of the Interior Movement Detector" works as expected for me. It can be easily observed on the indicator light on the rear-view mirror. And I guess when the customer complains, first thing they do is to check that light and not jump straight ahead to the software update. ~10 seconds verification vs few labor hours.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I've just learned a new function of my car. And also I can see how some BMW internal documents/instructions look like.

Just got back from the dealer. They tried to perform the update but their ISTA (July 2020) wouldn't allow them to do it. The SA's hunch is something may be different among the 2020 production dates (mine is 01/2020).

anotherguitarplayer and jrock60 - what are your production dates if you don't mind sharing?

I was just told yesterday (for what it's worth) when I picked up my new X3 that the update including Android Auto would be rolled out over-the-air later this year.

OTA is not supported on the X3.

Im in central CT. So my dealers are usually Hartford or North Haven.

And it seems like the dealerships are totally oblivious to this update and it may not be fully supported yet. So I guess it works out when in a month I have my oil change appt. hopefully we will have more details on here to be informed on whats what.

The dealerships around Philadelphia are equally as oblivious about the July update; however, I just got back from my appointment today and was able to get the update installed/programmed and now my X3 has Android Auto

Just like my dealership service department telling me today that nothing is available and wait until next year.

To be honest, I had a faint glimmer of hope about remote start also coming eventually to the black sheep of ID7 (the X3). But, I'll resign myself to expecting nothing from BMW so I won't have to deal with the drama anymore.

I don't even trust their OTA process for my Z4.

lcasale, my production date was 03/2020, and the dealer I go to service to was able to do the update. I would suggest going to another dealer as I just got it done today.
