Local country map is updated automatically OTA on LCI G01, but as said above, other country maps require a device with Connected Drive and USB to transfer the download to the car. From memory it created about 31GB of data on the USB for “rest of Europe” on my car. SP15 is different and requires dealer visit for iDrive updates.

On MY22 SP18 LCI and on, OTA iDrive 7 updates are possible, but require My BMW app to download to a phone first, and then transfer to the car. The My BMW app alerts to an update being available as does iDrive in the car.

Pre LCI SP15 G01 does not have OTA updates for iDrive 7. The update process is different for these cars and may require a dealer visit.

Here’s what I see using BMW Connected Drive. Notice the map update via USB for non local region, and there is no other software update showing in BMW Connected Drive. However, in the My BMW app there is a Remote iDrive 7 software update available to version 03/2023.67 which I haven’t applied.

I think that website is using general language about automatic updates, as iDrive 7 remote updates are not supported in pre LCI.

Should be easy enough to check in your iDrive menu relating to remote software updates -

Well if the response is same as mine...isnt that implying i have the same option? Clearely there is no update available for you (via usb) since you have ota functionality...which did offer you an update...

There is a map update available to me via USB, but that doesn’t show on the site in your image, but does show in Connected Drive.

If your car doesn’t support remote iDrive 7 os updates, which it doesn’t, how does this work “The software of your BMW will be updated automatically” as per the website ?

Also, I’m not sure it’s as simple as one upgrades consumer via OTA and one updates consumer via USB. I seem to recall pre LCI SP15 may require a dealer visit. Maybe some can clarify.

If you simply search this thread, you'll see plenty of owners confirming that they needed a dealer visit to update iDrive for their earlier year cars. I had a dealer update my '20 to get the update that added Android Auto. In fact, I requested that they update my system one more time before the warranty expired to get the Alexa functionality but they wouldn't do it.

The way i understand this is that cars which run out of warranty can no longer update in some countries i have a german premium selection warranty until 2025 on my 2019 X3....

I'm not sure what your warranty policy covers, but even if you got the extended warranty policy from BMW in the US, there's a good chance they won't perform a SW update unless there's an issue. For instance, when I got the update that added Android Auto, I believe my reason was the Bluetooth connection with the phone at the time was sometimes flaky. So, they agreed to update the SW under warranty to try to remedy the issue. The next time, I simply stated that I wanted the latest update to add Alexa functionality. They denied that warranty request and also stated that Alexa only works on... MY '22 cars (? whichever year that it came preloaded), even though you see in this thread that other '20 owners got the Alexa update and it worked correctly. I'm sure if we offered to paid, they would've tried...

If you go back in this thread, you'll see others experiencing something similar about denials for iDrive updates under warranty. Or else, their dealer was unaware of a new SW release, which happened to me a few times.

Regardless, it wasn't an OTA update for MY '20. The dealer had to physically hook up the car for a few hours to perform the update.

OK, stick with your own opinion and enjoy te car.

2019 cars beside your one single exception do for sure not have any other OTA updates than the navigation maps.

LOL. Premium selection is a used car warranty and has zero connection to any connected features.
