Question F25 X3 Not Starting. Press Clutch message, but is pressed. Any ideas please?

Hi all. I have searched the forum and not found the same issue. My manual X3 (F25) 2.0D 2010 refuses to start.

I follow the usual procedure: Brake and clutch down, press button to start... but it doesn't. The first stage of the ignition comes on ok (lights on dash etc) and the message saying press clutch to start.

Brief background to this: for a couple of weeks prior, the car occasionally wouldn't start the first time (not turning over either), but did on the second attempt. The clutch pedal was also squeaking slightly. I thought it might be connected so had it greased which stopped the squeak. Not starting first time became more frequent (always with the same message) and a couple of times I slammed the clutch down and it started which could, of course, be coincidence. Then it just gave up trying to start altogether.

The X3 is now with a general mechanic. They have replaced the clutch sensor switch and checked the starter motor and battery etc. The two original separate key fobs have been tried. An auto electrician cannot find any electrical/wiring faults and there are no fault codes showing. Apparently he did manage to get it to crank but not start a couple of times. They have now run out of ideas.

Has this happened to anyone and been fixed? Or any ideas on what else to try please?

Not sure what the idea might be, but you might have slightly better luck asking on the F30 forums or similar. I doubt there's a lot of manual X3s in this forum.

Frankly I suspect you should take it to the dealer or BMW specialist instead of a general repair shop.

Odd. I'd have also suspected a switch that is telling the car that the pedal is pressed in.

If it was my car, in my driveway (I have some tools and some experience) I'd be doing things like making sure the new switch is working (i.e. check for a connection w/ a multimeter), maybe shorting the plug from the car itself to mimic an operational switch, getting under and being sure the switch is contacting the pedal arm itself (maybe it just needs to be adjusted better).

If you can't do that stuff, a dealership might be a good call. They'll have wiring diagrams or specific troubleshooting procedures or both to trace this upstream until the faulty part is found.

Unhappy Push button and clutch

Did you manage to fix the issue as I am encountering the same issue at the moment on bmw x3 2011
Pressing the clutch and the start button and car does not start only after several attempts
Battery new all checked with two mechanics so far plugged the computer to the car and apparently no issues found
Also been told that the clutch and push button have to be perfectly synchronised to start but driver push button cars before and it was not the case
Any help would be appreciated
