Need A Key Fob for 2014 X3 35i

I tried buying one off of Amazon and following some different programming videos; it didn't work. What is the most economical method of getting a new working Key Fob for a 2014 X3 35i? I tried searching the forum to no avail. Thanks in advance!!!

There is no economical way. The videos about holding the key to the steering column do nothing to a key that is not mated to your car from new. You need to buy a key from the dealer for $300 plus.

Yeah, the dealer is really the best way to go. For the fob and the cut key I think you're right around $300. That said, do not pay them to program it. At least on my 2013 they told me that I'd need to have them program it (an hour of labor at $125 or so), for any of the comfort access or profile items to work. That wasn't the case, I set it up following the online videos of putting it by the column to pair it, and everything worked perfectly with comfort access and profiles. At least you can save a bit there.

If they try to pressure you into getting it programmed, just tell them you're only buying as a spare key in case something happens to your primary key, and you just need to unlock the car and start it, and you don't care about comfort access or profiles on the backup key.

Worst case, if you can't program it, you can always go pay them the same hour of labor to program it. Might as well try and save the $125 on the front end.

Looks like I'll stop by the dealership today. Do you know if this is something they should have in stock or am I likely to have to wait a few days? I'll hopefully save some money with my CCA membership. Thanks for the inputs!!!

The most economical way is to join the BMWCCA and then find a dealer that offers discounts to club members.

I think it will be a few days. The metal portion of the key needs to be cut for your VIN, and in the past that has been done in Germany.

They'll typically have to order it. If the key itself is fine and it's just the fob part. They might have it as soon as tomorrow. More likely some time early next week. Order it at the parts counter. Be sure to bring registration and ID. If you need the key cut too, then longer time and more money.

Stopped by, used my CCA discount. I just got the electronic portion for $250 plus tax. It'll be in on Monday!!! Thanks again for all the help!!!

That sounds like right about what I paid. They should program it to your car for you when you pick it up. My dealer did. Bring the broken fob with the good key with you.

No broken key; needed to sacrifice one for remote starting capability. Now installed.

Do you mean the fob is actually installed into the car as part of a remote start system? Does that mean the fob is normally unpowered and then powered up with remote start command? The reason I ask is that I don't think you can register a fob with more than one transmitting fob within range.

Interesting thought; we'll see. The car won't open or start with the installed one alone. I know it's soldered in place.

Just to follow up; with the convenience function disabled on the sacrificed key, I had no issue programming the new key which I did this evening. (much to my relief).

Thanks for documenting this. The lack of a factory remote start capability is, for me, a major flaw. I don't know if I will go with an after-market solution, but it's good to know that one is available.

I'm certain there are closer locations to you; the place that did the work for me is Audio Barn up in Exeter, NH.
