what apps/nav do you use for roadtrips?

So I drove my first mini trip (200kms) this weekend amd was wanted to know what apps people use for long trips. I found that there is not really a good all rounder, here is what I found:

ABRB (with linked OBD) device:

Was get for showing the expected arrival% and current percentage.

Waze was great for traffic, Hazard/speed cameras and police reports

BMW Nav the only benefit was HUD directions, which Apple Maps can also provide, but no info on expected arrival charge, also I didn’t see anything that said categorically “you will get to this destination with your curent SoC”

So I end up running all 3 solution, which was not ideal, keen to hear anyone’s comments and thoughts on this. Cheers

Should probably clarify my question, as I’m in the IX3. I want to see my expected destination charging, which ABRP can give me, but the maps/directions aren’t great, Waze is good for directions, but no HUD and changing info. The BMW Maps, don’t seem to provide much intel at all on Expected arrival charge etc. So wanting to see what combo of Apps IX3 users use for longer trips where charging stops and SoC needs to be considered.

When you set a route using the built in nav, keep an eye on the GOM in the dash.

As the route is calculating, so is the GOM. You will se a little loading symbol.

The GOM now takes your route and driving style into account and the result has been spot on for me, even whith my higher than average consumption and on longer trips.

As you now have a fairly precise expected range and a remaining distance in the nav, you can easily see if you will hit your destination.

If you slow down for a bit, you will quickly see the GOM change. But different speed zones doesn't affect it, as it would when driving without nav.

Oh, and I use ABRP to plan my trip ahead and find the Ionity chargers I will need on the way.

Then, I manually input these into the BMW nav.

If my destination is easily within range and I don't need an accurate GOM, then I'll use Google Maps, since it's much more up to date and generally offers better routes on rural roads.

When we're off on a long trip. I use Zap-Map to plan the trip and then plug the chargers I want to use into the BMW Sat Nav. I always build in plenty of contingency and have a few backup chargers in mind in case the first isn't working or too busy.

The built in nav will plan your route etc and charging stations, but I prefer to use ultra-rapid chargers on long trips where I can, to minimise the stop time. Unfortunately the BMW nav doesn't have any option to set your charger preferences (in terms of speed). It does try to minimise charging time on the route, but this has been hit and miss. For example when we travel up to Scotland it completely ignores the ultra-rapid Gridserve Chargers on the M6 and selects a slower one elsewhere.

There is option for speed and brand of charger on bmw sat nav, it is very odd way to set it up in search.

If you're searching for a charger, yes.

If you're letting the nav select the chargers for an out of range destination, then no.

So you mean the car won’t route you to a charger for a trip that requires charging?

No, it will. You just don't have a say in which network to prefer.

Nothing beats a TomTom sat nav in my opinion. Mine has a built-in SIM, and gives me live updates of traffic jams. I have had many situations where the TomTom has reported delays on the route, but the BMW built-in system is showing no traffic.

Helpful topic, as planning a trip that will be > 200miles. Granted, my kids will give up before the car will, but the lack of dynamic routing to take into charge is a little disappointing. Obviously, Teslas have this area well covered as they own their chargers but, I thought the app would at least allow suggested charging stops enroute, so only plan I have is to add a charging stop manually. Any others have a different work around?

I just thought with the link to BP Pulse and Ionity for BMW charging there’s an opportunity to integrate those stops into the BMW Nav? Probably not for our OS…

It does. Input a destination out of range and you will get a list of suggestions for charging stops.

Thanks Gnillab. I’ve double checked and I can’t see it. So my journey will be 268 miles and it says it out of range, but I can’t see any suggested stops. I’ve got the latest app as have the communities economy comparison.

Does it only compute once sent to the car and the journey started and then shows on the in car nav?

It will only work out the charging stops in the car. I think the EU version of the app may show charging suggestions, but the UK version doesn’t unfortunately.

I confirm that in Spain it is showing charging suggestions, also if you change the percentage with which you want to arrive, it suggests other different charging points

So here in Australia the app doesn’t do it, and I tried the BMW Nav in the car and it didn’t show charging stops, all I got was a blue circle on the map, which I think was showing me where I would get to, but not even sure if the circle was saying “this is where you would get to at 0%”. Hopefully not! But disappointing.

Just to update, I inputted destination in the in car Nav and it maps in optimised charging points as part of the journey.
