How is it not a major upgrade? it is Huge. Question is - why is BMW so quite about it. They did the same with 7 series- pretty much released new car under LCI. Doing the same with M550 5 series - new engine, new tech.
on x3 - new engine - more HP - New tech and interior updates Engine alone is a worth while proposition. B58TÜ has the following changes from the original B58 (according to BMW tech documentation): A Fuel preparation with 350 bar injection pressure B Cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold C Adapted exhaust turbocharger made from steel D Split cooling E Coolant pump with integrated pressure relief valve F Heat management module with electric split cooling valve G Single-part chain drive |

When the 2020’s arrive, the PR machine will get cranked up. This is a great time to buy if the updates don’t appeal to you. But I like the updates appeal to me so I’ll wait. Last edited by Hendoo; 08-09-2019 at 02:36 PM.. |

Apart from the increased power of the updated engine - for the average punter - Points A to G above will go right above their heads and will be totally irrelevant to them! These updates belong in the “so what” category for most people! As a confirmed petrolhead - I, of course, really appreciate these things - but people like us are probably in the minority! Cheers Steve

Aside from the fact that those changes leave out other value engineering changes like a lighter camshaft, point G is what scares me the most. I want my car to last 200k miles without having to drop the engine just to replace the timing chain. Longer chain = less wear before gears start slipping and your engine takes a giant shit. I'd much rather have the shorter chains on the current generation. Don't believe the propaganda that you will never need to replace the timing chain. That is based on how the manufacturer defines "lifetime." Honda defines it at 250k miles. Guess when the timing chain on my last Accord took a dump? Who know what BMW defines it as, but it's probably not going to be as good as Honda...

Its not just increased power though. It also has a more efficient engine, which is actually a bigger selling point over the horsepower increase for most people I would imagine. |

B58TU1 is a "Technical Update" 1. (opposed to current B58TU0)
Many components are updated. Purpose of updates is typically to enhance / fix issues discovered with the previous engine (nothing like millions of miles on every continent in the world for testing) and, were possible, to make more cost effective. In addition, BMW says, "The main objective of the revision was to further improve emission performance to meet the requirements of the WLTP cycle and RDE measurements. In addition to the CO2 and particle emissions, the focus was on future legal limits as well." BMW Release: https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/10/31/b...88-horsepower/ More details: https://bimmerlife.com/2018/11/01/b5...brings-388-hp/ The fact we get 30 extra ponies is great. I really like the thought of getting an engine with a bunch of fixes. The two concerns I hear are about a single timing chain (vs 2) and lighter crank. I am not worried. I'd prefer single chain to two - less friction and weight. I am not worried about the crank. I'd prefer a lighter crank where possible. The only concern is, "A smaller crank won't handle the power." While it's possible. I seriously doubt BMW would use a crank that couldn't handle 2x the load expected. The'd be on the hook for serious $$ should cranks start failing under warranty. Very expensive repair. With that kind of risk, you always over engineer.

Just to confirm for everyone, M Sport Seats will not be coming to the US model X3M40i or X4M40i in 2020. They have decided not to include it, and it will not be available for individual order.

Just placed an order for a MY20 M40i (TY92) and received the specs for confirmation. SOP is 09/19 and will be heading to Australia. Anyone else ordered and has the following lines in their order?
1A1 Equipment for fuels with carbonisation tendency 230 EU-specific supplementary equipment Does 1A1 refers to the petrol particulate filter? |

Dont worry about the live cockpit for all of you who wish you had it. I have it in my X5 and I never use it....I look at the HUD instead.

I use the HUD all the time as well. Don't really look at the actual dash much. It's not a manual so no need to look at RPM range.

B, C, E, G are for cost saving. Also, you forgot lighter crank. (cost cutting) non of these changes are for power upgrade. 30 hp upgrade could be done without all those changes. B58 is just over designed from the beginning. Now they are going for efficiency (cost wise). |

Agreed, but I will concede that the higher pressure fuel pump could theoretically mean an even higher tune, but it would only matter at the extreme end of the performance spectrum- territory where you far exceed the ZF HP850 torque rating. Also reliability is TBD. They had some initial issues with the previous generation fuel pumps at launch.
