Technically, I believe it's possible. But I would not expect any automanufacturer to do this. It's a big update with a lot of risk. On top of that, it has a _very_ different interface. A large majority of people would freak out at these changes.

it would be possible to update, again from a technological perspective, and have a Skin or Theme option to allow both old and new interfaces.. but that would add yet another layer of confusion.

At the end of the day, the question is why? A ton of risk, millions in expense and support calls, for what gain?

It won't happen.

Exactly. Every car essentially has "CarPlay preparation". BMW will give you a 1 year trial in hope that you won't be able to live without it and pay for it in the 2nd and 3rd year.

The same is true for the new 1-Series. Every car has CarPlay preparation.
I added CarPlay Preparation as an option for Q2 2019 build and got it for three years unless I am reading the information on attached wrong - maybe it depends on the market and or is it a difference between X3 and X4?

Actually there is not much changes as to me. Interior looks the same, digital dashboard is nice but I am not looking at cluster at all - following only HUD.
M Sport seats are excellent, but there is limited upholstery selection - to me it would make sense with Merino leather.

I'm still hopeful. We won't know for sure until we're allowed to order. Looks like that will be some time in August.

I think a logical person knowledgeable about how BMWNA works would say, "YES!".

Nobody wants merino and M Sport seats more than me (I'm even changing from an X3 to an X4 so that I can at least get merino). But it's crazy how may members saw the BMW International press release and just can't shake the belief that it will apply to the US, no matter what BMWNA says.

I think the M Sport seats may be added to at least the US X4 when the LCI is released (that seems like a good time), but there's every indication that BMWNA is continuing to differentiate the 3/X3 from the 4/X4. I think that the 4s will continue to get some different styling elements (especially around the grille) and will be offered with higher-end options. I think the exception will be the M3 and X3 M which will match the M4 and X4 M content.

You'd think so, but changes can happen any time. X5 was released last fall, within first months, Driver Assist Plus was upgraded to Driver Assist Pro, with 2019/12 SOP. There is other precedence - like the M Sport Steering wheel, that did not wait until LCI. It may even be packaged with and not a separate option. Until they can actually be ordered and start showing up, we won't know for sure.

So.. it may not be available.. or it may. hinckley and others seem to make a sport of trying to squash my dream, but I am an optimist and will not be oppressed. ;-)

sinbad, I hope nothing more than for you to be able to say, "I told you . . . you dour old SOB!"

I don't mean to rain on your parade, it's just that I've been around BMW soooo long and have watched the way they do things. I'm pretty sure that the X5's Driver Assist Pro was not an upgrade. I think it was an additional option with delayed availability, something that's pretty common on new models. And the sport steering wheel thing is one of the oddest and oldest of BMWNA anomalies. It goes all the way back to the E39 5er. It's crazy common for the first year of a US (only) model to go without the sport steering wheel, only to offered in the second year (it happened with both the X3 and X4). Somebody, somewhere has an explanation for why they do that. There were others . . . up until a short while ago, the first year of a new model always had a six month delayed availability for the M Sport package, and the first year wouldn't get shadowline trim. Again, some sort of nutty marketing scheme that that someone in Woodcliff Lake dreamed up.

Anyway, keep on believing. I REALLY hope I'm wrong on the X3's M Sport seats and merino.

Kind of wrong thread.. but thx. I had heard AMG 43 wasn't coming out in 2020. Good to see it did. I was hoping it would feature MB's new inline-6. it doesn't. Too bad. I would have considered had they managed to get it in.

I mention the Merc here in hopes that BMW is watching them and brings the higher-rated M340i engine to the MY20 X3/4. It's kind of crazy that the new 40i's start production in less than 45 days, and that we don't have the answer. And ya, that AMG 53 engine is an impressive bit of kit.

Does id7 introduce any new features that are worth having or is it more of a reskin with more animations?

I help get a friend into a 2019 X5 w/ Live Cockpit Pro. While some of the features I like, I generally preferred our 2018-19 BMW Full active displays with ID6 - thought ID6 more intuit and easier to use, but then, of course, I had been using ID6 for many months and ID7 for something like an hour or two.

ID7 has
  • Full Screen Apple CarPlay
  • Better, more complete, active display (personal preference - some like the gauge look)
  • Allows over-the-air updates, not just for maps, but for for ID7 as well (ID6 was maps only)
  • Support for remote start (though no word if this will be option for X3)

Nice write up for live cockpit (ID7).
https://www.pocket-lint.com/cars/new...0-infotainment

Word on ID6 active dash and gauge look. Skeuomorphism is a term used in GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces) and it refers to the use of ornamental clues inherited from a past role. There are two easy examples to point to on iPad/ iPhone. Original Notes app had a yellow background with blue lines and a brown header - made to look like a yellow paper tablet we've seen for 50 years. Calendar app used to have brown leathery looking header and corner leathery looking tabs in bottom corners - like desktop calendars of yore. In both cases, these were design elements tying a modern digital application to a historical device used in the past. In both cases, it was an inefficient use of space and resources. Apple has gotten away from these designs.

I do not like the ID6 skeuomorphic gauge looking dash. When you are not confined to circular gauges, then why push an inherent inefficient design. The obvious answer would be "human comfort" - as people generally do not like change - esp. on a large scale. Even ID7 Live Cockpit Pro is far behind where it should & could be. I drove a Peugeot rental 2 years ago with a great active dash - with different skins (and one user customizable skin) that could be rotated through via roller on steering wheel. Audi is pretty good. The new 2020 Corvette looks even better... And Telsa gets it too. I don't mean to poop on people who prefer the ID6 cluster, I can respect and appreciate that point of view.
