M40i acoustic glass?

When I placed my order for a 2019 X3 m40i there was no option on the site for acoustic glass. Today, I noticed that it was there for a $150 addon. I probably would have chosen this if it was there when I ordered. Anyone know how much of a difference it makes having it?

I have driven a G01 with and without the option and even driven back to back against my F25 X3 and older car that cost a third.

The difference is barely noticeable and tyre roar isn't suppressed because the noise comes through under the car and wheel arches.

I specced it because its cheap and because some owners were complaining about unusually high wind noise from the wing mirrors in the G01.

Has your car entered production? If not, it can be added. My dealer told me option was available when I was putting in an order in early May, even though web site made no mention. Dealer let me cancel my order as I want some of the MY2020 love.

That said, I've driven without acoustic glass and car is still very quiet - especially once you turn of ASD (fake engine noise)

Have you received options and pricing for the MY20 X3? some of us are trying to find that.

Nope. Same boat as the rest here.

It's probably negligible, but for $150 why the hell not

Well I have it and it makes a noticeable difference. I wouldn't imagine why anyone wouldn't order it if they had the ability to - the cost is negligible but the benefits are very noticeable especially on a windy day

Wasn't able to add it to my order since my car was delivered on Saturday. Bummer. The noise without it is way better than both my odyssey and WRX so I'm happy enough. Agree, seems like a no brained at $150. Wish it showed as an option when I was building mine. Ah well.

Good question. It's things like thicker glass that separate economy cars from luxury cars, and it's only $150.

I'm definitely going to add it to my order for a 2020, but yesterday a dealer did a search in his system and he said almost none of the 2019's on the lot, and almost none of the 2020's on the lots, or going through the order system, have that option.

He said some people have expressed to him that they are worried that the replacement glass, if one of their windows were to break, would cost an arm and a leg with this option. He thought that was pretty ridiculous, but that's humans for you.

In the US it wasn't even an option you could choose in the configurator until MY 2020, but was available. I found out about the option here and had to tell my dealer what the option code was so she could add it.

I had to have my dealer add it on, but I think it showed up as an option later in the year? Either way, it's possible.

Dunno know about that. It's on the 2019 X3 30i configurator that is still up on BMW's website even though you can no longer order a 2019 for weeks now.

How did BMW's sales and marketing not know that they were coming out with 2020s so they didn't bother to update the website?

The site had always been a pile of hot garbage, but in this case it's intentional. They are purposely delaying 2020 X3 info to avoid cannibalization of X3M and X4 sales.

I do know. As was stated earlier, it was not in the configurator until just the past few weeks. They updated the configurator with it at the same time they were activating the 2020 configurator. It was available outside the US the entire time.

The real issue with the acoustic glass isn't the cost, my understanding is that it is laminated instead of tempered and it makes it much harder for rescue personnel to quickly get someone out of a locked vehicle since you can no longer break the window. Of course I guess it will slow down car-jackers and police as well so it depends what you perceive as the main risk your windows face .

I've been dealing with crashes in the police for nearly 20 years and never known the glass have to be smashed to get them out - I guess it can happen but I have never seen it. Seen many roofs cut off though and glass get smashed in crashes ... obviously ... but I like the idea a thief can't smash my window easily to get at the OBD and reprogram a key ! (I don't have comfort access so the OBD is the only way for them without the keys I think now).

I opted for the acoustic glass. Like many of you, I thought, "For $150, why not?" I will say when comparing it with one of the cars I test drove which didn't have it, there is a real improvement in the quietness of the cabin. I think it was money well spent.

I would bet that 99.9% of BMW shoppers have never heard of this concern, so I don't believe this is why they don't order acoustic glass.

True, the theft resistance is a nice feature. I’ve had to break windows three times in my life to get doors open. It was someone unresponsive with locked doors and either developing fire or just being unable to determine if they’re breathing. All stuff that is immediate and would be in the realm of first on site as opposed to a technical extraction by firefighters. I think the current generation of cars unlock if the airbags go off so it may be less of an issue.
