Dealer policy to "unplug dashcams"
Took my 2018 X3 M40i in for it's first oil change (7,000 miles after 12 months of ownership) found it interesting the service advisor said it was policy to unplug all dashcams as they have a lot of specialty equipment, blah blah blah. which cannot be photographed/recorded. This was told to me after the work was completed and he handed me the keys back.
I was somewhat annoyed as previously I caught the local Jeep dealer taking my car to run multiple errands, go to lunch and talk crap about me. The owner of the dealership didn't find it amusing and was furious with his employees. Anyone else find it unusual or is just me? What would happen if I refused on my next visit? |

I took mine in for schedule services and dealer told me it needed full day to work on car.
Fine by me. Coming home and checked the dashcam. The technical person hook the car to battery charger, turned on the car, opened the hook and walked away, eating, checking phone, chatting with others etc.... The whole recording from the time the car in workshop till it driven out was 6 hours in total and there were approx 30 minutes that I could see the guy standing in front with a laptop, changing the oil, filter etc... sitting the car, turn up / down radio, checking headlight / indicator lights etc.... assume he was checking tyres pressure as well, cos I couldn't see in there. The service fee was $900 ($AU) including 6 hours of labor change. You are the judges and the reason why they unplug dashcam |

I had multiple occasions that were recorded on dashcam the shop workers going to dunkin donuts with my personal car. I have no problem letting the service employees know they are being recorded or monitored. With the Mercedes ME app I am able to monitor speed and how many times the car has been shut off or started, and ultimately get a print out of where the car was in the last 24 hours, this last option turns on a notification on the screen saying all vehicle activity is being monitored they know. 1 time I dropped off the car for some service work, the car alerted me that it was started 127 times all within the dealers parking lot being driven from one side of the parking lot to the other. What were they doing? Delivering parts from the front of the store to the back in my personal car for 6 hours? Once I do hear a dealer say that dashcams will be disconnected/turned off while having service done I will kindly ask for my keys back and find another dealership. |

Any excuse they give will just be corporate bullshit. At the end of the day, we all (including them) know that it's because the mechanics will eventually do something that will not look good on camera. It's a liability thing for them. Which is EXACTLY why people want them to stay on, lol.

The dealer should tell you in advance if they are going to unplug anything. If it is not a service covered under warranty my car does not go to the dealership.

In most European countries you could get in a lot of trouble if you would record them without consent and try to publish, and anyway you couldn't use it against them. So no use of recording. In Switzerland even in traffic usage of dashcam is not appreciated, even though it is allowed.
