M40i DIY oil change

I’m going to do a quick oil change between my first service.

My local motor factor can’t find which spec oil I need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a US model and it's 0W-20 on sticker under the hood. 6.5 liters. Dealers over here don't even want you putting air in the tires. I added weather floor liners and they suggested I go to a dealer to install them. I did my first oil&filter change at 1500 miles "myself". Getting ready to do another at 5k miles. Lot's of plastic on engine so be careful torquing the oil filter housing cover. I can see issues long-term with the plastic heat/cool cycle. Dealers won't even give you a price quote for the service on line or over the phone, you have to bring it in. Good thing we have laws here, because it's one big $ grab. I almost walked out of the dealer while trying to buy it. They worked me over for an extra $1000 US. To be fair most dealers operate like that. I'm glad to see someone want's to do their own maintenance and not just primp and polish them.......... Good luck.

Just a thought T16ole....Did the dealer not give you a spare 1 litre refill......When I got mine a couple of weeks back they had put a spare in the boot inside a zipped bag which grips the boot material...so i know now what oil it needs.

Did mine as well. I called the dealer here in DFW and they said bring it in for service. I change my oil with no problem and now I called for oil life reset and they said come in again. So sick of the arrogance. Just instruct me. Lord knows I will be in sooner or later. Thinking I shouldn't of sold my Explorer Sport. Ha Ha
Anyone reset the oil life?
Thanks...

Press and hold the Instrument Cluster Set/Reset button for 10 seconds. 3. The upper display in the Instrument Cluster will be illuminated with a Service Item. The lower display in the Instrument Cluster will indicate the remaining time or mileage left for that Service Item.

I did the same thing just the other day. I'm in Alberta Canada. Not sure if the Canadian spec is the same as US but I did grab some pictures. Drain bolt doesn't come with crush washer from factory but the oem filter provides one so I threw it on.

The 2018-19 Audi S5 and RS5 use 0w20 (The spec is VW508) and the owners say it is almost impossible to find. Only available at Audi dealers for $9.00 per quart. What does BMW charge per quart of 0w20?

This brings up an interesting point...

Once I exit the free oil change period, I never want to return to get them to change my oil.

How do I reset the service reminder without going to the dealer?

Do I need to tell them NOT to reset it when I do my last change?

(BTW...dealer is waaaaaay far away and getting them to change my oil would consume my entire day. Heck the last time it took them 5 hrs to change it!!)

Hmmm week ago i was in dealer for service engine oil and diff oil after break in period (1200miles) and they say I have to pay full price fir that, bmw change oil after 10000miles for free ( igot two times for free) so bill was 365$ and I asked them for any discount ( why not) after that 315$ out of my pocket.
Anyone have same situation? Or that is normal?? Last 20 years I drove japan car and never heard something like that

I use Aral Super Tronic 0W40 LL04 and I would also replace the sump plug with a magnetic Gold Plug. Catches all the crap that would normally be floating around in the engine.

I have been used a fluid evacuator for years, but this is the first vehicle I have owned where it is not possible. There is no dipstick!

Would be curious to know if there is a workaround and use fluid evacuator to change oil without dipstick...

Also, does anyone recall a thread were user shared his/her maintenance schedule for BMW? Having a hard time finding it with search functions... thanks.

That is because it isn't a M car and they don't do a 1200 mile service for oil and diff. So you had to pay for it.
