Am I imagining this, or just happen to be coincidence most of the time that auto start/stop will start the engine few seconds before lights change to green?

I have noticed similar. Its pretty good at guessing when the light is turning green.

I think it might just be a coincidence

No idea how it relates to engine stop start, but in some markets there is traffic light recognition in the driver assistance system and DAP.

I believe it uses the camera system to monitor traffic lights, so any change would be need the traffic light to change before the system acted.

I’ve had the same thought! It’s uncanny how often the car starts on its own just as the lights change.

If they do know when the lights are about to change then I’d be asking for next week’s lottery numbers as well! As that would be impressive

I’ll bet if you really start thinking about it, you subconsciously see the cars stop coming the other direction and twitch your foot on the brake pedal.

I think the sensors detect the cars in front of you moving and shut off the start/stop

This has been my observation. When the vehicle in front of me starts to move forward the engine starts.

Actually my old Q7 had traffic light recognition and some kind of information when the lights would change. It was sadly disabled in NY State, but there is actually technology which was more useful for Audi since it didn't have mild hybrid and had more delay to start the engine, compared to my last X5 which I could almost not even tell engine stopped.

In X3, at least m40i, start stop is very seamless when I let my foot off the brake, however when it starts on its own, such as when AC or Heating system requires more power, I noticed it's much louder, with a different noise and rattle.. Same when it starts on its own at traffic light.

No, I don't really let my foot off the brake, I have to document this somehow to test but there are some intersections I heard they can communicate with compatible vehicles, or if the DAP senses the other side turned Yellow, and starts the engine?

Oddly my initial G01 did this. The radar detected the car in front moving away and kicked in the start. That was with the pre-LCI non-hybrid shizzle.

The LCI (at least in the UK) I have no longer does this, which pleases me. no end. Probably because the hybrid start is so super smooth it doesn't need to?

Similar experience. But it was my pre-LCI G30 that used to do this. It was nice. I suspect you’re right that they got rid of it with the mild hybrid.

I've noticed the same.

Sometimes it shuts off as I'm slowing down for a stop light that just changed to red. I know that is a feature as well but the car exhibits better than expected decision making when it decides to do it. It won't shut down the engine if cars in front of me have been stopped for a while, meaning light is about to turn green.

When it starts on its own - it is likely either low battery or cabin temperature related, either of these are likely to want more electrical power so more load on engine, so probably faster idle.

Doubt that.
1. Would it work even when car's view is blocked by a car in front?
2. How would it deal with such situation:

(okay, three columns of traffic lights on the right are very rare, but still...)
Definitely no "radio" intuition. Ambulances etc. have a "magic button" to clear their way, which is OT.

It just wouldn’t work in those scenarios which would be no issue. The main trigger is removing your foot from the brake which this only adds (or would add?) to.

Well whadya know… today in the school pickup line, windows down, AC off, auto hold on, ASS on (because why have the car running?). After minutes of sitting, car in front of me moves and mine starts up.

Coincidence? Maybe not.

The device was called an Opticon (or Opticom?) back when I drove for HFD. The trucks had a small transmitter up near the light bar and there were similar sized receivers mounted on the traffic light cross bars (at least on the busier roadways)

When Fire or EMS vehicles were in response mode the device would change all the lights (within range) to green for us. I don’t believe that police cars had the same capability

My car is also running when the light turns green. Because I disable ASS as soon as the car is started. ASS is an appropriate acronym since that "feature" sucks A$$.
