2020 X3 M40i or used 16 X5M/X6M

Hi Everyone,

Need your advice. I am from Guatemala and bought a new 2020 X3 m40i in El Salvador (Cheaper and can run number plates in Guatemala without issues). It arrived at the end of April but since covid 19 both countries have been on lockdown so my car can't be delivered. Today, I found both a 16 X5 M and 16 X6 m with 26k kms and 21k kms respectively for about $17k less than the M40i and in my country.

What would you do? Wait for the borders to open or get a used full M Suv?

Has anyone had a X5/X6m and have gone for a x3?

Thanks for your advice

This is more of a new vs pre-owned question. Purchase less brand new or go pre-owned and get better value for the money but deal with reduced warranty and potential past issues.

The X5/X6Ms are bigger, faster and more luxurious.

Four years old huh? If you opted for the M40i in the first place it must have been for a reason that you didn't go for the FOUR year old vehicle in the first place? Presuming there were the same-ish deals on the F-O-U-R year old vehicles a few weeks back.

Get the message?

Joking aside, depends on what you want out of it. New, nimble, new-feel car (which I think is faster right?) or bigger vehicle. Incidentally, speaking of new, the second hand one will be previous gen right? Could you live with previous model?

Also I suspect financially, could you ideally spend that saved $$ on something else of more value? Would it ease your financial burden or you don't care? If the latter personally I would take the new one :-)

Not even close. Those big tanks really move and are sub 4 second 0-60 and low 12 seconds 1/4 mile with mid-one teen trap cars. In addition, they out handle our cars by a fair margin.

Most people here will probably tell you to get the M40i, since that's what we all did. If you're nervous about the M40i, don't be. It's a wonderful vehicle that does 99% of it well.

I personally would go for new M40i but if I was forced between an 18 M40i or full M X5/X6, I would go X5/6.

I own both.... 2019 M40i new in Feb and a 2013 X6M.... If I was only to keep one... the X3 is gone....I’m not even interested in trading my beast...

Anything that breaks on an X5M/X6M is going to be VERY expensive to repair. You should ask this question on the X5/X6 forum.

Here in Central America, there is practically no pre owned market for M or M performance. Now and then, something pops up usually below 30k kms. So I haven't seen any used M40i and this are the first X5/X6 M that have pop up.

I really like the X3, is the perfect size is lighter and new. But the M's are 80k off the MSRP and offer more performance. I got a 27% discount off the MSRP on the M40i, even if I found a pre-owned one, it will basically be the same price.

I am also afraid of the repairs I would search for problems and mileage.

There's nothing like a new vehicle made to order, but is so strange not to know when I could get the X3. I will see if I can negotiate a 3 year maintenance plan to see if I it helps with the decision.

I have to testdrive the X5/6 to see who they drive compared to the x3.

Thanks all for your help!

C&D's test was of a 2018. BMW quotes 2020 as being .2 seconds quicker, at least in the US. Not sure what the case would be in Guatemala. The beasts are quick, but the M40i is starting to encroach a bit on their straight line performance

Especially if you throw a stage one or two tune on it.

I've owned and enjoyed a X5M, the numbers don't tell the whole story. Although I just bought a new X3M40i, faced with the same choice and pricing as the OP I'd be driving my second X5M instead

I had same situation 1 year ago. New 2019 X4 m40i or Used 2017 X6M. My choice was New X4 M40i.
