I just replaced a defective power tailgate strut on the right. Symptom: It closes when I push the button on the tailgate. It unlatches when I use by FOB or push the button inside the vehicle. But it does not open up. After a second it re-latches and pulls the door tight. When I use the FOB and it unlatches and I immediately manually lift the door, it opens all of the way to the top. Again if I hit the button on the tailgate it closes.

How do I configure it to properly open and close without taking it to the dealer? I've seen the coding instructions posted elsewhere but would like to avoid that.

Take a look at the 'settings' function via your iDrive, one can 'set' the lift height of the tailgate....maybe it's not set properly - that may be all that's needed.
