X4M Comp ride quality

So i wanted to get some opinions on the ride quality of the X4MC. I have owned many M cars throughout my 50 years. M3, M4, M5, and many generations . E46,m3 ,e92 ... M5 F10 F90. i also owned a Nissan GT-R which i thought had a crazy hard suspension. So i just came out of an F90, and now i am leasing the X4MC, but i have to say this vehicle even in comfort mode is stiff as hell. i live in South Florida and the roads are smooth. i was on 95 North today driving in Sports Plus all the way around, and any imperfection in the road you felt hard. Again I'm used to hard driving cars, if i didn't like them i would have leased a non M. i just feel and correct me if I'm wrong , the M division could have went a little easier and gave a more comfortable ride in comfort mode. some are saying the conti sport tires do not help. i rather have what i had on my M5 , Michelin pilot Sport 4S. is it just me or some feel the same??

its bearable (ny roads) but def the harshest ride I can remember and I've had a lot of cars. harshest in a performance suv for sure

I'm sorry but if you owned all those M cars and think the X4M is too stiff and harsh, I don't know what to say. It's way more comfortable than your typical M car but is firm as it should be. There is a much nicer balance of handling to comfort compared to past M cars. I personally find it very comfortable especially considering the level of performance.

Maybe it's your tire pressures? If you're driving in Sport+ it's very stiff and for aggressive driving only.

PS4S will improve road noise, and a subtle difference in ride comfort which in combination with some other improvements was worth it to me to swap out the Conti, but it's not like the Michelins make a massive difference in comfort.

few thoughts:
- try to deflate the tires a bit. dealerships tend to overinflate them
- the suspension will soften up somewhat after the first 1-2k miles
- I find that wider tires also make the ride softer - e.g. 265/295 staggered setup
- MSS springs really soften the ride. If the firm ride is a serious issue, MSS is the way to go

I love it how it drives and how the suspension is. It is stiff but not uncomfortable and doesn’t bottom out on potholes.

Then you know your FL roads aren’t even close as bad as they are here.
You’re just spoiled, come back here for a few days and when you got back to driving in FL you’ll feel like you’re driving on clouds lol

My W205 C63S is much stiffer than F80 M3/4. And I feel like my wife's X3Mc is slightly stiffer than my AMG. It's very uncomfortable when going over a bump at an angle.

Comparing it to other SUVs I've owned I find it to be more compliant and easier to drive then, the Range Sport, Velar, e53 x5 and F25. It's like riding on a cloud compared to my previous e90 m3(H&R springs/20s) and e46m3.

The manual states sports plus is for asphalt without imperfections. Anyone who can drive around on public roads and bear MC sport plus suspension settings is a true, die-hard enthusiast with no need for comfort because it's stiff as hell-as it should be on the track. Granted, this is my first M car, and I don't have the history that many others in the forum here have with previous iterations of BMW performance suspension. That said, the factory offering, even in comfort, was too harsh for these Maryland roads IMHO. I went MSS, dropped it an inch, and now find it acceptable both at a sporting level and as a DD that must suffer these roads and tow a trailer on occasion. I'll probably never get to track this truck on anything other than a straight quarter mile strip. It would be interesting to see the skidpad of a factory MC Vs this MSS modified variant. It feels like the lower COG compensates for the slightly increased roll. I wonder what the instruments say.

Definitely check Tyre Pressure.

My X3M has been crashy, banging on each bump, regardless of size.

Checked my delivery tyre pressure and it was 44/47 F/R!

Dropped to 35/35 (which came up as 38/38 as the weren't quite cold).

The difference is completely night and day. It's like a new car!

Still, going with MSS next week to drop a little and improve the ride further.

I've said this on the forum before and I'll say it again so apologies for being the broken record
  • The road noise from the car is what accentuates the harsh ride and is my biggest gripe by far. Those boomy thugs can get very irritating especially on a prolonged harsh surface
  • I've done 5000 miles now and the ride does definitely soften up somewhat but don't expect a significant change
  • Deflating the tyres again helps somewhat and definitely softens the ride and is probably the best 'non mod' option but again don't expect a huge change

On smooth surfaces as asphalt the car is lovely to drive. It handles very very well and is as smooth as you would want. It's just a shame that most people don't get perfect roads all the time hence the complaints.

My advice is, if you want a very smooth daily driver get something else like the X3M40i or an X5. If you want the speed, handling and thrill and can live with what is absolutely a very harsh ride on uneven roads. Get this car

After spending an hour driving the X3M Comp with the settings all in sport plus settings I thought the ride was great. Having a lot of M cars and still have a few the ride is excellent. It has the nice tight taunt feeling and you feel connected with the road.
