ASD Bypass

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I understand the X3MC has ASD like the M40i?

What's not clear is whether the little button on the centre console just turns that off, or if it's impacting the exhaust outside and possibly performance?

Can it be coded off?

Does the M40i fuse trick do anything?

Does it impact HK performance?

Thanks!

Little button controls the exhaust valves too in combination with Sport Plus.

I do not hear ASD in the X3M like I did my M5. It’s minor if present.

I don't have mine yet, but saw a post elsewhere that said it was louder in the X3M than the M40i. That said, unlike the G01 forum, nobody here seems to be discussing it. So maybe you are right!

Greetings, Zero71. I discussed it in fair detail in my delivery thread - https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1651916 .

But to summarize your questions:
1. Center button now does very little, even in Sport+ (a slight increase in exterior noise which is perceptible in the cabin when the other flap opens). Majority of the increased sound appears to be from just augmenting the fake engine noise.
2. No idea whether the flap opening affects performance – defer to others but doubt?
3. I’ve never coded so can’t answer that one, but as it is still iD6 would think so?
4. Fuse trick – discussed in my delivery thread – unknown if that circuit now also controls the flap?
5. HK Performance markedly improved – just as in the G01 series, at least IMHO

I have removed mine instead of coding.
As onfireX5 said that it is barely noticeable, but it creates a humming low freq similar to a droning effect.
After unplugging, the interior is much quieter.

I have took a few pictures, I will put together a DIY sometime next week.

Cheers guys. R33 looking forward to photos. I presume you mean you disconnected the ASD from the amp thing in the boot rather than removing fuse. Be interested to hear if anyone coded it out?

X2 for unplugging. Takes maybe 5 min.

Noticeable difference with it deactivated. The ASD produces many unpleasant results. Cabin is much more enjoyable without the piped-in sound effects and HK unquestionably performs better when not tasked with reproducing engine sounds.

That was one of the options discussed in the G01 thread, r33, but some concern was raised by a few that it may not allow software updates if just left unconnected (if that's what you mean). Same with the fuse, but that can just be put back in if updates are needed so not a major issue. And if you code it off then after a software update you'll have to re-code but that isn't a huge deal either.

The bypass harness is simply plug in and forget it as you never have to do anything when it is used. My wife's G01 had the backup camera software update which was a major reset to her profile settings, but the bypass was invisible to it.

Here are the images I posted in the G01 thread (and the process I used to install in our F97), if it saves you any time.

Thanks Max Well great post, I was just away to ask that as that’s 2 things I would do is remove the ASD and force the exhaust flaps open constantly .

There you go.

Same exact location and how to.

Thanks Max Well

Software update should be able to be done. It will just skip the ASD module.

Yes - software updates are completely fine as the bypass allows a completely seamless, invisible presence. My wife's G01 is definitely testament to that as that major software upgrade from BMW had no issues.

And what a difference it makes to the sonic environment when you bypass it (if you're into music). I can't even listen to streaming anymore - all of our albums and new songs are placed on our USB stick in FLAC format. Marked difference!

Where is the bypass harness available in UK?

I have to say, coding it out with bimmercode or bimmerlink is tempting - doesn't require rummaging in the boot to re-enable before a service. Assuming either app is compatible with the X3M.

And of course, fuse 218 is temptingly cheap if it doesn't impact exhaust flap control. But you need to put it back again.

So I just pulled fuse 218. Exhaust flap and button continues to function. There's a obvious volume difference from the back of the car is Sport Plus when you toggle the exhaust button. No errors. The sound does sound more rearward so ASD is off.

Quicker to do than I thought. Trim panel just lifts out, then a screw driver to pop the sound deadening fabric fastner (I just did the lower rear one). Lift fabric, pull fuse with the wee red tool, refit tool and assemble. Took a couple of minutes mostly spent figuring out the fastner. I've wedged it inside the card holder in the owners book in glove box. Will pop it back before RIS.

Good info thanks, now just need to get the exhaust flaps to stay open all the time. Think it was fuse 203 on the M40i but not too sure now on the X3MC unless someone knows.......

I like to have the button to open and close them depending on mood so will leave that be.

So wait does that exhaust button on the centre console actually control the flaps or just the ASD? Or are you meaning the buttons as in M1/M2?

It controls the flaps. There's quite an audible change when you flick it on and off, especially in Sport Plus, even with ASD off.

The exhaust button makes zero difference when in Efficient, totally pointless, probably why its default position is on.

I'd like to have the Sport+ exhaust note all of the time - it's not as if the car is loud anyway. Anyone know how to do that, could not see anything in Bimmercode?

Is it just a case of sticking the valves open? I thought there was more ECU stuff in terms of burbles and noise?

Ah right ok, that's what I was getting at if the valves stay open in every mode

Internally, the hum is gone. If I roll down the windows with baffles open, in sport especially, it'll makes the same noise. The cabin is well isolated from the exhaust notes stock. Asd artificially just piped in some rumble. I prefer just what naturally seeps in from the exterior.
