EGR recall

My 35D goes in for the EGR recall in a couple of days, one of 1.6m BMWs being recalled. Does anyone know whether all EGRs are changed or just ones that leak? I fear having my car quarantined for a couple of months due to a lack of parts.

As for the recall in the US, it's for the EGR cooler and, as far as I know, the replacement part(s) are not yet available. Moreover, it's not clear that anyone on this forum has had their vehicle "quarantined". One person has indicated that her car has a coolant leak and the EGR cooler could be the source. Apparently, she is still driving the car, but had plans to visit a dealer. Frankly, in the absence of parts and/or removing the affected vehicles from the road, this recall appears to be of little value.

It seems about 25% of vehicles recalled need a replacement EGR. Mine was ok. Some EGRs when checked are leaking. These vehicles have to be quarantined as they are a real fire risk. The cautious advice is until a dubious EGR is checked then don't drive the vehicle in a situation where you can't exit it rapidly, ie on a motorway / highway. The time between initial indications of fire and a severe fire can be minimal. The chances of this happening are very low but once the risk is identified many people will be cautious...as will BMW.

Got my 30d booked in tomorrow morning. My egr valve was replaced a couple of years ago due another fault so no idea if it was replaced with exact same one or a newer type.

Update on mine. EGR cooler was apparently leaking and requires immediate replacement. Parts on back order with no eta. They have kept my car and thankfully I got a 530d touring with 30 miles on the clock until its fixed (initial loan period one month). Had been in a 116d whilst they had it in yesterday so was not gonna be happy keeping that for the duration. Luckily didn’t have to have that argument. I was told due to demand for loan cars they are doing rentals with enterprise but as mine was late in the day they did not have enough time to turn that around.

Fyi this was at Marshall Hampshire (Hook) and I have a 63 plate F25 30D.

Good luck with the wait, hopefully not too long. At least you have some decent wheels.

Thanks. Tbh I am really liking driving the G31. Did 170 miles in it yesterday and so much nicer around the corners and the boot is huge. The newer 30D engine is smoother and has a nice growl to it (assuming that is amplified internally but either way its a nice sound). Only downside is the length of it.

I got a letter through the post a couple of months ago. There is a post on here somewhere about the year models affected as its different depending if you have a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder diesel engine.

My dealer notified me when I took my car in for service, then a couple of months later I received a letter from BMW. Unfortunately, I still haven;t gotten my car repaired as there are no parts available apparently, still waiting, almost 6 mos. now. I am assuming the EGR heater isn't a critical part

It is not life or death but from my understanding it just helps emissions. I know a lot of diesel car and truck guys delete it for more power and bring up global temps a bit.

Where are you based and I assume you are still driving your car? Mine was checked and cooler was leaking so they basically impounded my car as unsafe to drive until its been replaced. I assume they taking an overly cautious approach.

It can be life or death if it leaks! Fire can be and has been the result. Hence the safety recall of 1.6m vehicles.

What are the signs? I've never noticed anything but having to add a small amount of coolant every few months. Goes from Max to below the yellow indicators.

This is the egr cooler. I’m not mechanical but I assume its a closed unit so you wouldn’t be topping it up so I guess you are referring to radiator coolant? No signs for this just a recall letter or as above you can check your car reg plate for known recalls (at least in the UK).

Hey all I live in Australia about 3 months ago I looked into this egr recall and my car is still at the bmw dealership in adelaide not fixed I was told 2 weeks ago they had the parts for my car the car was supposed to be fixed this week, today they said they don't have the part I have to wait for it to come from Germany.
All they have done is sent me around in circles 3 months later i still have a broken car.
Would anyone have some advice on what i should do?
Should they issue a loan car?

I can't answer for Australia as in the UK but most are getting rental cars from Enterprise. I got a loaner from local BMW dealer and have had it for 4 weeks.

My 35D has just been quarantined by BMW. I now have a loaner from Enterprise until the new EGR arrives from Germany. The dealership told me they use a camera inserted into EGR to determine one of three classifications - 1) no evidence of leaking coolant - no action required. 2) evidence of leakage but minimal soot contamination - a non urgent replacement of the valve as soon as possible. 3) heavy soot deposits - vehicle impounded immediately pending replacement of the EGR assembly and a loan car made available at no cost.
As well as the potential fire risk due to a EGR valve leaking coolant, they advised that continued use could also damage the DPF. They also said that the EGR valve used the same coolant circuit as the rest of the engine so if you have to keep topping up the engine coolant, it could be an indication of the EGR fault.
I now have the use of my first ever hybrid - if only it was an i8!!
