Lane Departure Warning?

Does anyone know what this is?

I have never seen this in action and can only see it in my cluster when you shine light on it.

I would assume it's lane departure warning.

The symbol depicting the road with lines on each side is the lane departure warning. In my X3, the arrows light on the sides when the lines on the road are visible to the system so the warning is available. The steering wheel vibrates if the system detects your vehicle is leaving the lane.

The linked BMW video may be helpful in understanding the system, although it is not specific to the X3.

Thank you.

What I can't figure out is how to enable it.

In the video it shows a button to turn it on/off.

I have a 2014 X3 and can't seem to find any button to trigger this.

You probably do not have it in your vehicle. It is not standard equipment but an additional cost option.

In my opinion these extra cost safety features are worth every penny because the cost of a single incident easily exceeds what these options cost, not only in repair/replacement costs but in avoiding injuries and lost lives. I once bought a CPO in which the original owner paid a lot to upgrade the stereo system but did not buy a rear view backup camera. I thought she must have been an idiot for that decision.

Normally where would the button be in a 2014 X3 35i?

On my 2016 X3, the button is just below the emergency flasher button in the center of the dash. This button turns on the intelligent safety menu where you may then activate lane departure warning among other optional features. I looked at page 108 of the 2014 X3 manual and the intelligent safety control appears to be in the same location as in my 2016 X3.

It is always a frustration when your car is "fitted for but no with" an option..and I doubt you will be able to add it.

I saw that Garmin now have a GPS system with Land Departure & Collision detection built in !! so you can add it if you want it.

Depends on the vehicle. On my 235, it's located below the dash on the left hand side (where the storage box is located on some other vehicles). I don't have this feature on my '15 X3, but like you, I see the "lanes" in my dash cluster.

EDIT: If you don't recall ordering the option, check your VIN details.

How come I don't have these buttons on my 2013 BMW 320i even though I have the lights on my instrument cluster?

Im not going to lie, I have always wondered if this was a feature that could be turned on with coding or if you need a bunch of hardware to make it work too.

Everyone has it on the cluster, you just won't have the buttons if you don't have the feature.

Because you didn't order the feature presumably

Aren't those symbols also for active cruise control?

Because BMW installs the same instrument cluster in thousands of models that have many different options installed. It would NOT be cost prohibitive to have an instrument cluster for each optional selection. Instead...one cluster that has all the capable options...but if the contol modules, buttons, and switches aren't there (due to NOT ordering the option)...they don't illuminate (unless you do the hidden cluster TEST)

Yes...you are absolutely correct. The additional horizontal lines illuminate when ACC is activated and you adjust the distance between the car ahead.

{ACC Indicator - uses the car, continuous vertical lines and horizontal lines}

{Lane Departure Warning Indicator - uses the dashed lines and left/right arrows}

On a 2013 X3 35i, it's on the left, below the headlight switch. 2 buttons - one activates the lane departure warning, the 2nd is collision avoidance. The switches replace a small storage compartment.

Also very good decision to raise resale value. While the latest safety tech may seem a bit overkill today in 4 years when you go to sell the car they will be common place and everyone will be looking for them. Is it even possible anymore to buy a Hyundai, toyota, subaru, honda without blind spot monitoring/lane departure warning?
