Prob windy day something hit it or dropped on to it.

I would bet a good amount of money that this damage is as a result of carrying a canoe on the roof and it being heavier than the specs allow. You can see the two indentations that would typcally be where the foam-padded rollers for a canoe/kayak carrier would go.
