Don't know about quality but the toureg tdi was much nicer to drive than the q5... Probably because the t-egg and q7 are on the same platform.

The Q5 is an X3 rival, the Toureg is closer to an X5. I looked at a Toureg before I ordered my X3, nice to drive but too big for what I wanted and the wood trim in the SE uk model is awful.

If you want a fair comparison, you should compare Tiguan/Q5/X3...
I tried the Q5 and the Tiguan: - Q5: very nice interior but too small for a tall guy like me (6'6'') - Tiguan: good space but a lot of road noise. The performance of those 2 can't be compared to the X3.

Don't forget Volvo's XC60. Before we got our X3 (which was our first BMW after several Volvos and further back an Audi), we ranked the XC60 above the Q5. As has been suggested above, size-wise the Touraeg really is a competitor to the X5/Q7.

X3, Q5 or Tiguan
I decided for the X3 28i 6-cylinders for following reasons: - Tiguan was just going through a model change. The new model was not yet available, I could not wait and I did not want to get the old model. But I liked the smaller size of the Tiguan (and price). - Q5: much closer to X3. I liked the X3 6-cylinder, and Q5 was 2.0l turbo. Also I liked the X3 8-speed ZF automatic with gearchange-stick, as I like playing around driving in manual and the ZF got high ratings. Most likely, if the new version Tiguan would have been around at decision time, I would have gone for the Tiguan, because a) compactness (I do a lot of city driving and parking), b) price. |

The engines in the X3 will absolutely pee all over the equivalent VW and Audi engines, there is no comparison. As for styling etc its all down to personal choice

Good point Tony.
The xc60 has equal power (actually more with the Polestar update), excellent seats and similar interior dimensions. In my opinion the volvo wasn't as nice to drive, had a boring cockpit and used a 6spd auto.

IMO the Q5 is a much better value than the X3, specially if you opt for the facelifted 3.0T and 8 speed tranny. The reason I went with the X3 is because I already have an Audi as well as a VW, and I really love coding these cars using vagcom. The savings between a Q5 and an X3 similarly equipped is about 5K.

I had test drives in all 3. I still really like the Touareg although better to get the Altitude and avoid the SE trim. It's also like driving a big bus in comparison to the X3. If you don't need the extra space, the X3 is the better option. Q5 looks better than the X3 in big alloys IMO but after driving both the Q5 and the X3 there was no contest really. Would think Touareg would be least reliable given T1 and T2 reliability and Audi and BMW on a par but time will tell

Decisons!

I now drive a '13 28i X3 - absolutely love it. No lack of power or creature comforts and luxury. It's an eye turner in Deep Sea Blue! I will say this is my 3rd BMW - my first NEW one, and I've never been disappointed with the level of engineering in the car, or the service form the techs. I've had about 17 cars in the last 10 years - New Audi's (A5, Q5), Used 645ci, Land Rover LR3, Range Rover Full size '08 and '10, Range Rover Sport, Volkswagen Passat, (2) EOS, 2007 MB GL450, 02/03 Discovery.. ETC... I can say that an AUDI Q5 SAVED my life. (photos attached) I was t-boned by a 76,000 dump truck. Although I fractured 9 bones, I was out of the hospital within 3 days. The car was obviously totalled, but they said had it been something of lesser engineering they would be scraping me out. I owe my life to that car! We looked at a VW Touareg last year and were appaled at all the numbers - Fianance, Lease, Warranty - and the sales experience was so bad my partner got red faced, call the guy a Pr**k, and we left. I can imagine taking it in for service would be the same. Although the new 2012 T drives great, Its no BMW or AUDI. See if you can take the Audi Q5 overnight or the weekend - you may find the seats thin, un-supportive and extremely trying on the back after about 30-40 miles of straight driving. Did a XC trip from CT to TX in it - and regretted every return mile of the trip. But it saved my life... I put every faith in BMW engineering that it too would save my life, but feel that a Mercedes may be tougher - but wouldn't buy anything less than a GL450 now from them. I say BMW or even rival MB - perhaps the ML diesel? Choose wisely.

Q5 vs F25 X3? I like think I may prefer the overall shape of the Q5 more, and certain aspects of the interior i.e. the B & O Audio, and SLIne 20ich rims. Other than that, the X3 especially in 3.5i guise rules all in this class especially in space (cargo, rear sear room) and drivability IMHO Former Q5 pic

The timing of this post is perfect. I am now in the process of choosing between the Q5 and the X3. I am comparing the 2013 Q5 3.0T against the 2013 X3 35i. The US pricing for the 2013 Q5 is still not out but I guess it will be similar to the 3.2 model. On that account, the new SUV will be comparable with similar options installed.
I prefer the looks of the Q5 both in and out. But I like the drive of a BMW. I previously owned an S4 and the longest one I kept, 5 years. IMHO, the technology in the Q5 is better that the X3 (Nav and B&O audio to name a few). The drive of a Q5 is sedate and relax. More of a disconnect with the road. The X3 drives like how a BMW should be. Total control and connections to the outside world. So it will come down to how you like to feel in driving that new SUV. One more thing, the earliest delivery of the 2013 Q5 here in US will be around October/November. Last edited by valeram; 06-29-2012 at 11:29 AM.. |

To me the Q5 reminded me of a Buick. Comfortable and quite but definitely not a driver's car.
I've stated before that the X3 isn't the most attractive car but it is the best SUV to drive which is why I purchased one. Quote:

I am a former owner of a 2006 Audi S4 car looked great and was awesome when it worked correctly and when there wasn't an engine or a warning light on since the day I got my car. Audi itself as a company was terrible to deal with. I once called because my window was stuck down in the winter and they told me the next appointment was 4 weeks away. Like r u kidding me lol. I had a headlight warning light in my car and the fixed it after my 13th trip back to the dealership.
I traded it for a BMW m3 and the it was night and day. Never had any problems in over 3 years. Staff at the BMW dealership are helpful and take care I me. And now I just ordered my x3 and I'm impatiently waiting for it lol |
