I agree. It seems like these bold pronouncements about banning ICE cars have been made without much thought or planning about how it will all work. EV's work great if you can nightly charge. But that is certainly not the case for 100% of people. Not even close. So we have tons of EV's being pumped out by manufacturers now while the infrastructure is severely lacking. I don't get it but maybe it will all somehow magically work out.
I agree with all that. I think it will be just free market dynamics. The more EVs and more demand for charging will force everyone (stores, parking lots, apartments and wherever people park cars) to get more charging stations. There is a lot of money to be made there.
I see it from both sides and in certain scenarios ICE will still be very much in demand and needed. But certainly large percentage of people in US use cars to commute in the areas that much smaller then most EV range (of course not everybody). And personally if mostly just commuting in the car I kind of like the idea of plugging in at home and not having to go to gas station but again this assumes u have garage and plug and all that. So certainly it's not for everybody.

ICE bans that are set for 2035 are just for sales of new vehicles. The average age of a vehicle on the road in the US is 12.5 years, so until 2047 you will still have a large amount of ICE vehicles on the road. Getting upset about this now is around 25 years too early.

Exhaust sounds are an important safety feature though. On most urban road surfaces, you don't hear an EV coming. You see it coming and there's a certain we're-not-supposed-to-be-doing-this thing about them.

I'd like a Tesla though. Just saying

Yeah, PHEV hybrids get crazy mileage, making gas prices at that point completely negligible. It's truly the best of all worlds, which is why I hate the strong push towards flawed full-EV technology.

It is also impossible to transition everyone onto EVs unless we open up at least 75 massive new copper mines and expand also all other resource extraction to supply manufacturers. It's just not going to happen, no matter how much political and environmental group push.

I like the idea of manual transmission EV in certain cars. I think Toyota and others are working on this. But I agree with those who will miss the sound. I’ve been to Formula E and I’ve been to NASCAR. No comparison. Formula E was a snooze fest.

Why would I buy this? I can just get any other manufacturer making an EV if I'm in the market.

IMO nothing compelling about this at all…EVs suck but at least make a car that looks attractive.

The greenie group pushing EV don't care about your fun. Or the drivers fun. Or anything fun for that matter. "Racing" is nonsense to them. They want to outlaw fun. Lol

Isn't it time to lock this thread, given the story is incorrect and we are now veering into nonsense?

Lol.
I'm saving my electricity consumption for the fridge freezer, can't afford to power anything else here in Scotland thanks to Putin and our ridiculous push for Net Zero. Charging a car daily, no thanks not right now…

Will it eventually happen? Yes because the industry is moving towards EVs but that Instagram post has nothing to do with a possible iX3M/iX4M. This probably relates to the testing they have started with the "i4M" test mule.

I took a Tesla for a test ride recently. Just so I can keep an open mind on all of the hype. The number one thing that stood out to be was in the parking lots. People walk out in front of the car constantly as there is no noise. By the time I leave a busy shopping center or parking lot, my ICE car would be away given no pedestrian interruption. This certainly effects the 0-60 performance if one is calculating on getting anywhere faster than our ice cars

In Chicago, there are literally NO GOOD DRIVING ROADS. I have to go about 3 hours to find some decent roads. That would be a nightmare in a pure EV car.

If and until the charging infrastructure is as easy and convenient as delicious gasoline, I don't see real-life demise of ICE cars. It doesn't matter that 90% of trips are 50 miles or less. It's that 10% where we want the freedom to drive and explore....

Personally I think hydrogen (internal combustion) will be the answer, as there are just too many barriers to mass battery EV adoption.

I think this new battery prototype solves most of the issues of current EVs with 20 years of life and 3 minutes of charging.

https://www.cnbctv18.com/technology/...s-14719811.htm

Agree with most of you and as a non-auto commuter EVs do not make sense for me personally with their short range, long waits at charge stations etc. for types of driving I do. I would be interested in EV 2.0 when fast charging infrastructure is created in the next few years and the battery technology is improved. The iphone 1 compared to the current model is a good example of how EVs will be improved in the future.

I'll keep my classic ICE sports car for that nice weekend drive and use the next gen EV ///M as a daily.

You haven't heard the "sound" until you experience the 15K RPM high revving F1 car in person accelerating out of a turn during a race.

I totally agree with you. The national power grid is crap as it is and if there is a push for EV's, a lot needs to change. Not to mention A LOT more charging stations. I don't see an EV as convenient as ICE because I can fill my tank in about 7 mins whereas best case I get 25-30 mins of charging to get me 100 miles maybe. F that noise. I also don't want to drive a 'sterile' feeling car at this point in my life. That may change in the coming decades but for the foreseeable future, I have no plans to buy an EV unless it's out of necessity or force.
