20 winter wheel and tire setup. Pleased!
Finally got my setup installed. ART (DAI) Replica wheels in 20x9 ET35 in Gunmetal.
245/45R20 Nokian Hakkapeliita R3 SUV Tires - These tires were consistently #1 in every winter tire shootout I could find online so decided to look them up. Ends up they were half-decent affordable and also came in the 20" size that matches OEM sizing for the 20" wheels so no deviation to worry about re: Xdrive. OEM 718M Winters I bought TPMS sensors (Schrader) from Europe on eBay. They were learned just fine, but there seems to be tire pressure notification in the dash/HUD for about 10-20 seconds when I first start the car. Goes away on it's own and I see all reading on the TPMS page. Not sure what that is about...

Looks great! I just ordered a 2020 X3 and was shopping for a winter package. Considering Hakkapeliitta 9 runflats studded on 18" wheels. My wife doesn't avoid potholes well and thought we could use the extra sidewall.

Yes my wife is the same way. Still have more sidewall in 20 than I would in 21 and she doesnt drive my M40i much. Her XC90 also has 20s for winter but with a taller sidewall. |

Cancel my last message - the Hakka 9 is studded version and R3 is non-studded. I am also non-runflat (slime kit in the trunk, roadside assistance on standby, lol) I certainly do not want studded because of the noise and damage to my driveway/garage floor but your needs are most likely different than mine. I also think studded performs worse in dry conditions, which is still the road conditions we encounter most during the winter in the Maritimes. Not sure if the cons are worth are ice performance gains.

I used to think like you do, but after 10 years of studs I'm a convert.

Not too bad actually.
I am Canada so keep in mind that everything is more expensive here than in the US, even after considering the exchange rate. Wheels came to $1050 Canadian (taxes in) Tires a bit under $1600 mounted and balanced (taxes in) TPMS sensors were $150 all in. Grand total of $2800 taxes included, Canadian. About $2100 USD if you convert at current rates. I felt it was pretty decent for a 20 inch setup with TPMS. They also look quite good for winters so I am happy.

Thanks - they are actually a gunmetal, which I prefer to black. Black shows road salt much more than gunmetal and is harder to keep clean, so Gunmetal is perfect for me.

Ends up that the tire pressure notification I was getting just meant that my pressure was more than 25% off the recommended tire pressure. I find the notification very ambigiuous as it does not actually say what is wrong, it just says ''Tire Pressure Notification'' - You can keep driving, check pressure when cold, etc. But then you look at the pressures and all 4 tires are green on the screen. Odd system.
You would think it would indicate what the problem is instead of making you guess. My rear tires were at 34PSI when the recommended rear tire pressure was 40PSI. I added a bit to get them to 37PSI and the notification went away.

I don't see that. I was able to change it to "winter tires" and assign the 20" size (I have 21" in summer) and from there it did a reset to learn the TPMS sensors. I see no other reset option unless I'm looking in the wrong spot.

To go back to the old Fxx style you can select "special authorisation" instead of the tyre size. |

nice set up
Did you buy them online or from a local shop? I am in Vancouver and looking for a similar setup. Thanks for sharing!

I am running 245/45R 20" Pirelli Scorpion - not run flat for winter.
I have an M mobility kit - compressor and gunk as I did in my M3. 3 winters so far - I will replace next year as I am at 5.5mm |
