Fire Extinguisher
Hi all,
Picking the new car up in a couple of weeks and have started to look on Amazon for bits, such as rubber mats, boot liner etc. Then I randomly thought about getting a fire extinguisher for under the boot floor, not only for "just incase" the worst was to ever happen but also if an accident was to happen and someone else's car was to catch fire. Saw a video once of a crash and the car just lit up but fortunately a passing vehicle had one and saved the drivers life. Does anyone else carry one? |

I have 2 x 3kg fire extinguishers under the false floor of the boot.
They are dry powder - more there to assist anyone else but my job is that of a traffic cop and I would not want to be helpless if I saw a car on fire and people in it. If my car caught fire it would prob be at the front so I may have time to get them out and have a go ... I have seen car fires and that is why I carry 2. At work we carried 2 x 3kg foam - for putting people out if necessary more than the car. Horrible but it is all about gaining time. |

According to specs they give about 25 - 34 seconds of continues foam. Would that be enough...? At least to gain enough time to get everyone in a safe distance.

On previous cars I've had, there was a fire extinguisher under the front of the drivers seat.
I googled and found that this: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_1159 |

Foam cools but doesn't knock back a fire anywhere near as effectively as powder. Powder doesn't cool though and makes a fearful mess and cloud. I've been in a building where 2 people used powder extinguishers on a fire and we couldn't see / breathe, albeit the fire was put out. Obviously the best advice is to get out - which is what firefighters would no doubt say. The other thing with cars is to remember bits have a habit of going bang ... like the boot or bonnet struts. If that goes and you are in the way it would be like a spear. I think a min 2kg extinguisher is a good option - I've just gone for more as I had more space. |

Curious if anyone is aware of how viable it is to keep an extinguisher in a vehicle during the hot summer months. Here in AZ the temps get to be 110+ which means the interior of a vehicle can easily be 130+.

Not an issue in the UK Lol ... I know foam doesn't like the cold unless you get a special one but as for too much heat ... don't think the UK will know

I've been looking at the ones H3R performance makes, they make some smaller 1.4 lb 1B:C units - mainly have thought about carrying one as we've had a few wildfires here sparked by car fires.

Very good advice, perhaps leave it to the pros. It's just the what if happened! |

The last one I saw was the driver of a delivery lorry who sadly died. To be fair by the time I got to it the whole lorry was alight but it is horrible to see something like that and not be able to do anything. The fire was so intense it super heated the concrete bridge he hit and the concrete went pink ... I don't think a couple of 3kg extinguishers would do anything ... but it was this incident that made me start putting them in my own car ! |

X3 fire
Came out of the Walmart after 15 minutes and my X3 was smoking. When I opened the hood there was a yellow fire. Could not put it out with my jacket but someone stopped with a large thermos of coffee and put it out. The fire came from the steering control box.
Anybody else has this issue? |
