Same here: happened to me couple of times - service did not find anything! Check your key fob in the pocket, considering to put leather case on it (very sensitive buttons? Or real problem?) |

The comfort access kick function requires the person to be at the rear of the vehicle with the key fob on them in close proximity to the rear of the vehicle. If the key is not detected near the rear of the vehicle then the kick function should not operate. The trunk would likely have opened some other way.

Totally, I’m glad I haven’t ordered mine with the kick sensor comfort opening. Anyone had the boot open on a vehicle without the comfort access?

The trunk should not open when the car is over 0 mph period.
You guys are putting so much effort into testing for bmw which should be an easy problem for them to solve. |

Update 12/10. Today I got contacted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are investigating the issue because several people have reported similar incidences to them. They also mentioned that BMW offered a software update recently that will prevent the tailgate to open when the car is moving above certain speed. My car was serviced two months ago and the dealer did mention that there was a required software update. If you experienced the same issue, please ask your dealer to do the update. Also report to NHTSA.

The software updates for the tailgate opening unexpectedly are covered by:
I will check with my dealer to see if my car needs the software updates in those TSBs. I haven't experienced any recent problems with the tailgate opening because I had the dealership disable the kick-to-open sensor. I am going to ask them to install the software updates and enable the KTO sensor. |

We've just bought a 2020 plate BMW X3 with the power tailgate. While parking at work today, the boot opened while i was reversing into a space and only stopped itself when it hit a wall. Considering i've only had it 4 days and now the boot door is all scratched i'm not incredibly happy... There didn't seem to be any way for me to stop it from the drivers seat when it started to open. I've made an appointment with the BMW dealership to have it back and wondered if anyone else had any issues with the dealerships fixing it under warranty? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I've never experienced that problem but I always park at least the 1st green distance indicator (looking at the rear camera while parking) away from the wall or any other obstacle. By doing that if the car decides to open the trunk door on its own at least the door won't hit anything. |

Same
I 've observed the same phenomenon. The rear opened on its own twice, once while parked overnight. I am pretty sure I did not press the fob.
Another issue is the intermittent functionality of Comfort Access. The door would not unlock when I am pressing the handle groove. I don't care about the door, but the spontaneous opening of the hatch is a concern. Difficult to troubleshoot, if the electronics malfunctions intermittently. |

Pressing the door handle groove - on inside edge of handle is only for locking. Just pull on door handle to unlock and open the door with comfort access. Cheers Steve
