I have thought of that, and asked the BMW Tech. He claims the fan is permanently attached to the head unit and cannot be repaired. Apparently he attempted to dismantle the fan on that X5 he was working on.

I have this exact problem. Noisey fan coming from behind the radio. 2015 f25.
Due to the lack of info I finally just broke down and opened up the dash and removed the head unit.
There is a fan inside at the back of the head unit. It’s not dusty and makes noise depending how I position the head unit. It is definitely the problem. Just ordered a new fan on Amazon for $12.
I’ll have to open the head unit to repair it which doesn’t look too difficult but I’m sure many would not have the skills, in which case the head unit would have to be replaced at much greater expense.

For those interested the model number of the fan is ME40101V1-D03A-G99

The one I found on Amazon is ME40101V1-0000-G99. The specs seem to be the same.
